He stalked her. Keeping to the shadows slipping from tree to tree , he followed the girl, never losing sight of her, never losing her scent. He increased his pace, falling behind her. She stumbled as she walked, stumbling here and there, but he matched her step for step, his feet sliding across the leaves skirting the puddles, he didn’t want to leave evidence that he was here. The fog helped; thick, swirling, the fog was his cloak, his accomplice, it wrapped around him, keeping him well hidden. Hidden was good. Hidden was safe.
He sniffed the air and turned his head. An open window, some sort of roasting meat was wafting out of the window. He was so hungry, not long now, he thought. Soon he would lean in and feed on her. Suddenly, a tavern door swung open and two drunk men walked out of the door. He slipped out of the men's sight, just a shadow not to be seen, watching the girl as she flirted with the two men, leave those fools alone he thought. He hated it when they stopped to gossip. The need to eat was swelling up inside of him. For a moment he closed his eyes trying to recall a moment when he wasn’t mucked about to this craving, this huge furnace that roared for fuel.
With a curse, she moved on again. He had her now, reaching out a gloved hand.
“Oof, have a gentle care,” said the woman,''Oh, hello kind sir, out looking for a lady are you?”
She was younger than him he thought: pretty under that worn face. Suddenly he was flooded with doubts. What he was doing was wrong, wasn’t it? Or was it? he wasn’t sure anymore. It has become an addiction, a requirement he had stopped questioning long ago. The woman must’ve seen something in me, and assumed he was feeling guilty, thoughts of a wife or a sweetheart perhaps.
“Don’t worry darling, there’s no harm in having a little chat, is there? come meet me here tomorrow, ” she said, reaching up with her hand and touching his cheek. He pulled back from her, jerking away at her unexpected touch.
“Whoa, no need to play hard to get darling,” said the woman
“I’m not playing hard to get, I’ll meet you here tomorrow,” he growled.
