Satyaki was a student of Arjun, but he defeated Dronacharya who was Arjun's teacher. Satyaki actually is said to have defeated all three students of Parshuram, that is Karn, Dron and Bhism.
The teacher will give his/her best but at the end of the day its the student's capability and capacity that shows not the greatness of the teacher.
