You say I am too young. Too young to know pain, too young to hate, to be depressed, to protest, to be an activist, to be a feminist, too young to even know my own sexuality. You are right, I am too young. Too young to be scared that one day someone will come into my school with a gun, with the intention to hurt people. To watch my classmates be shot, be killed, to see my classmate's blood on the floor, to even have in the back of my mind that there is a chance of that happening. I am too young. Too young to see a familiar face on tv, finding out that they were shot and killed, just because of their race and "looked older than they actually were". For their life to be taken by a middle-aged white cop "defending himself". I am too young. Too young to be scared that my life can be taken away just because of the person I love, to be scared just to be who I am. I am too young. Too young to have homophobia, racism, sexual assault, gun violence, suicide, and so much more, as my reality. My generation will grow up will realities that no other generation had to or will be scared or even terrified of but it is our time to speak our truth no matter what other people say. We are told that we have to be still, quiet, and most importantly respectful because the adults were talking, but they had their time, but it is our time to speak.
