When the four of them got back to Lawrence, they decided they all needed to talk over the plan and make sure everyone was ok with it. Gally led them to a room with a huge table where he lay out a map of the entire wicked building, he also put out some notes he had made, about floors, how often people would go in and out, small things like that. Everyone stared at it in contemplation for a moment, trying to figure out their best play. The silence spoke more than a thousand words, Minho was their priority now that Harper was back which makes the plan much more simple but now that Harper had disappeared, perhaps wicked had upped their security.
"I've been monitoring that building for about two weeks, they started moving their supplies in then. There wasn't actually anyone in there until recently but I knew it would only be a matter of time." Gally said.
"So what is the actual plan?" Brenda asked.
"Well.. we need Teresa." He replied.
"How would we even get her, I doubt she'd be willing." Frypan said.
"Gally plans on kidnapping her." Thomas said, his voice bitter.
"That is stupid. So many things could go wrong." Jorge said.
"We have to try." Newt sighed.
Brenda sighed, knowing that it was probably the only plan they had, "who would go?"
"I will, I'll also need Thomas." Gally said.
"I'm coming too." Harper stated.
"No." Newt said bluntly.
"I have to!"
"Stop putting yourself in danger! You have no regard for yourself!" He began to walk closer to her, backing her into a wall. Her breath caught in her throat but she ignored it, trying to keep her confident facade.
"I can't sit around anymore! All I have done for three months is be a lab rat and I'm tired of it."
"I don't want you getting hurt again!"
"I'll heal!" She was fully backed up to the wall now. She could smell his breath on her face.
"I don't care! You're not going and that's it!" He spat. He punched the wall close to her heard causing everyone to jump back in surprise, Newt had never been violent, he was always level headed and calm, obviously, only Harper knew what was going in with him.
He looked back at everyone in embarrassment, he couldn't have helped what he did but he felt as though it was his fault. He looked at the floor before leaving the room with his arm around his injured arm.
Harper brought her hand to her throat, trying to retain the sob that was dying to break through her lips. She refused to look at the others, she felt weak, embarrassed, overpowered. She wasn't used to feeling this vulnerable, no one could break her as much as Newt did, he was all she had left.
Thomas walked over to her from the table and she finally looked up from the floor to meet his eyes. He looked sympathetic but also angry.
"I'll talk to him." He sighed.
"Ok." She whispered.
Thomas left the room and walked up the ladders and onto the roof. He looked around until he saw Newt sitting on the edge of the building with his legs dangling off. Thomas went over and sat next to him, Newt didn't look up but Thomas stared at the broken expression on his face.
"What was that?" Thomas finally answered, trying to keep the anger from his words.
"I.. didn't mean to.. I.." He sighed and looked at Thomas. "I guess there's no point hiding this anymore." Newt pulled up his sleeve slowly to reveal the black veins sticking out against his pale skin. Thomas stares in shock.
"Wh.. why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't want to be a burden."
"Who else knows? Does Harper?"
"Yes but only Harper. No one else does."
"How?"
"Harper thinks that when wicked injected us they somehow injected the flare into us but.. I'm not immune apparently."
"So I'm immune?"
"I guess."
"We'll find a cure. We have to."
"That's a lot easier said than done, Tommy."
Brenda walked up the stairs to the roof, she stood at the top of the stairs and stared at them, she saw Newt's arm and simply sighed, knowing there was nothing to be done. She decided it best not to say anything about it.
"Guys, you need to go if you want to be there by night." She said.
Newt quickly covered his arm and they both stood up, they walked over to Brenda and then down the stairs.
When they walked into the room, Harper was sat in the corner with her head buried in between her knees. She had obviously been crying but no one was near her, she had asked them not to be. Newt went over to her and knelt down beside her. She looked up at him but she didn't look away, she continued to stare at him.
"Harper, I'm sorry for over reacting. I didn't mean to, I just.. I don't want to lose you again." He said.
"I know but I have to help, I have to contribute."
"Can you just.. sit this one out? I saw how tired you were earlier, you tried to act unbothered but I could see you slowly becoming tired."
"But I want to keep you safe."
"I'll have Tommy and Gally. I'll be ok." He smiled warmly.
"Do you promise?"
"I promise."
She wrapped her arms around him and they just sat for a moment, completely contempt.
Gally cleared his throat, signaling that it was time for them to leave. Harper pulled away from Newt and wiped the tears that had began to fall down her cheeks. They both stood up and Newt gave a quick peck to her lips before he left with the others. Harper suddenly found herself at a loss, as though she couldn't function without him. Brenda walked over to her and hesitantly put a comforting hand on her shoulder. Harper looked at the hand and then looked up to smile at Brenda.
"They'll be ok." She whispered.
"I hope you're right." Harper looked away from Brenda's face and at the door where the boys had left from. She sighed loudly as another tear fell down her cheek.
