I watched the flashing lights and sounds of battle fade into the distance. This is who I've become, I thought. Strange. I felt no remorse, just an empty space in the cavern of my chest where love, joy, pain, and sadness used to be.

Suddenly, I heard a rock clatter into the newly created rift in the street behind me. I spun around to see him. He gazed at me with glazy eyes. Letting them drift from my dirt and blood crusted face, to my tattered remains of my dress.

"You know Vi, I never really thought green was your color" He said looking back up at my eyes from across the chasm, separating us, permanently this time. The pain I see  in his eyes made me feel almost human again. Debris and ash rained down around us covering the ground like a corrupted snow.

My heart turned to lead, heavy, like it would eventually drop down to my feet. I looked down at my shaking hands. My green sleeves were torn to shreds, scraps of fabric limply dangling from my arms.

I looked up to meet his eyes one last time. Noise of the destruction around me became muffled, the sound of my quick breathing and pounding heartbeat filling my ears. Still he stared at me, his face expressionless, but I knew those eyes. I had spent too much time looking at them, I could see his pain mixed with anger. Years of our memories came rushing back in an instant. I gasped and opened my mouth to speak words I didn't hear come out.

"It should have been you."

and that was it.
