I woke up in an empty room, everything was bright white. Where was I? I tried to rethink what happened before but it was all blurry. All I knew is that my name is Kimberly Addams. I was laying on a very uncomfortable bed with white sheets.
I slowly put my legs over the edge of the bed and stood up. I tried taking a step forward but collapsed on the cold tiled ground. Suddenly two people were at my side helping me up off the floor. One was a woman who was a little taller than me, with long brown hair and deep blue eyes. The other was a young man who looked no older than 18, he had caramel hair and dark brown eyes.
The woman said, "Go get the doctor!" and the boy rushed out of the small room. The woman helped me to the only chair in the room "How are you feeling Kimberly?" she asked in an eager voice.
"W-w-where am I?" I asked. My voice was hoarse and ragged. "Who are you?" She looked at me with a puzzled look on her face.
"You don't remember anything do you?" She asked. "I am Ashley. We have been friends since we were 5." She continued without waiting for me to respond to her question. "You are in the hospital. You got in a huge car accident a few months ago..."
"A few months!!" I interrupted. She looked surprised by my outburst.
"Yes Kimberly." she continued. "3 months to be exact you have been in a coma ever since. Jack and I have been coming here every day since the accident."
"Ashley, who is Jack?" I asked, my voice still rough.
Then suddenly the young man and an older person who I presumed was the doctor burst through the door.
"Hello Kimberly," the doctor said calmly, "How are you feeling?" I looked at him puzzled then glanced at Ashley. "Well. How are you feeling?" he repeated.
"I'm feeling fine, I guess," I whispered. I don't think he heard me. But then he grabbed a pen from his pocket on his white coat and was quickly writing on a clipboard that I had not noticed before. The young man came and sat on the arm of the chair. He looked down towards me and smiled.
"Are you hungry Kimberly?" the young man asked me in a whisper. And just then my stomach felt as if it was being twisted and flipped inside out. I nodded slightly. "Let's go get some food in you." He looked at the doctor and said "Ashley and I are going to take Kimberly to get some food. We will be back soon."
The doctor nodded and left the room. About 2 minutes later a lady in blue pants and a blue shirt came in with a wheelchair. Ashley stood up to get the wheelchair from the lady in blue clothes. The young man next to me stood up and reached for me. I flinched away from him at first, but then he gently picked me up and set me in the wheelchair.
"I will go get in line for food," Ashley said to me and the young man. Then she leaned in and whispered something to the young man who was now pushing the wheelchair. He held her gaze for a long second and then continued down the hall.
He stopped when we reached a large shiny steel door with no handle. I was confused. Why did we not just follow Ashley? Then he pushed a button on a small panel next to the large steel door, the door started to open. He spun me around and pulled me in through the door. When we got through the door there was a room that was small. There was another panel of buttons he pushed the one with the number 3 on it.
"Ashley told me that you don't remember anything. Is that true?" his voice was soft yet concerned. I nodded to confirm that what he had heard was true. "Wow. Well, I'm Jack. I was your boyfriend before all of this happened."
"Jack," I asked quietly. He turned his head towards me and nodded "How old am I?" I asked.
"Kimberly you are 17 years old," he answered my question without hesitation. "Do you have any other questions, Kim?"
"Yes, just a few" I answered. "Where are my parents? Why are they not here?" Jack looked at me and then looked away frowning.
"Your parents are gone. They died a long time ago. I'm sorry Kimberly. You have been living with Ashley since you were ten." Jack said this with sympathy. I was sad, not that they were gone but because I did not remember them. Just then the door opened interrupting my train of thought.
Ashley was standing at the front of a long line. There was lots of noise, people were everywhere. But there was a sweet smell in the air. I took a quick glance to see where this smell came from. Ashley waved us over to an empty table. Jack and Ashley sat down on either side of me. Ashley set a tray full of food down on the table. I stared at it for a little while, my mouth started watering. I reached for a yogurt cup. It looked delicious, there were strawberries and granola on top. Jack handed me a spoon. I opened the lid and slowly diped the spoon into the creamy substance, when I pulled it out I moved it towards my mouth and stuck my tongue out to lick it. Jack and Ashley laughed.
When we were done eating Jack and Ashley wheeled me back to my hospital room. When we got to my room Ashley started filling me in on the things that i had forgotten. Things like our friends' names, my phone password, our school name, my teachers names, and all of that stuff.
The doctor came back about an hour later, although this time he had brought two ladies in blue clothes. They started asking questions like "Kimberly how are you feeling?" and "How does your head feel?" They barely gave me enough time to answer.
Then the doctor said "We are going to give you some medicines through an IV." This caught my attention. I shot a terrified glance at Ashley. The next second I was being helped back to the lumpy bed. The doctor was grabbing my arm. He took a cotton ball with some bad smelling substance on in and rubbed it about an inch or two from my wrist. One of the ladies in blue clothes had a sharp needle with a tube connected to the end. She poked it right in the spot where the doctor had just rubbed the awful smelling cotton ball. I winced on the outside, but on the inside I was screaming and crying. At some point during the stabbing process the doctor had left the room, I only noticed this because he came back with a pouch full of a strange colored liquid. He connected it to the opposite side of the tube in my arm. The doctor and his minions then left the room.
