The sun began to set on the water, the soft turquoise blurring into a burnt sienna horizon. Wendy dug her toes deeper in the sand. She inhaled deeply as if the smell of salt in the air could fix every broken piece inside her. She exhaled, tasting the bitter evidence of her healing not knowing if it was from the water dripping from her auburn curls or the tears cascading down her cheeks. At 29 this was not where she thought she would be. Every dream she had worked on for the last nine years seemed to wash away with the tide.
She watched as father's dunked their children and mother began packing beach blankets and cooler while trying to convince everyone to get out of the water and dry off. She held her breath thinking that those families looked picture perfect and wondered what it would have been like. On the contrary, she scowled at the young couples, cursing them for being so foolish and naïve.
Knowing her emotions were getting the best of her, Wendy placed the papers back down in her beach bag and stood making her way back toward the water. She felt the water rising with every step going deeper past her calve, up her thigh and right at her belly button. She closed her eyes, plunging deep within the cool liquid thinking is this really all there is.

Authors note: So this is the first story I have wrote in a long time: perhaps 4 years or more. I'm not sure of when updates will be or any of that. I'm writing this as a way to cope with my divorce finalizing on the 12th. One I did not want but am having to learn to live with. So it's drawn from real life. It's raw, it's real, and it's painful. This story will have issues dealing with depression, attempted suicide, anxiety, toxic/abusive relationships, and addiction. Be warned. Yet, this story is mostly about healing and realizing that some stories must end so you can start a new one. Thank you for your time. Any criticism is welcome but just remember some of the things and dialog might be real-life and not meant to be changed. Always be kind to one another.
