CHAPTER ONE
before and after

LORELEI XIAN KNEW THE BEFORE AND AFTER OF DEATH.

Her mother, Leilani Xian, inevitably got sick. For years, Lorelei would be by her bedside. Either braiding her hair or painting her nails with the window open so, that Leilani could look at the neverending corn fields and beautiful horizons. She slowly was deteriorating with each supposed treatment. By the time, she did die Lorelei, for the lack of a better term, was relieved.

Leilani was a nature enthusiast. Being able to see the world's beauty literally steps away from her bed, but not being able truly experience it, was a crime for a free spirit like her.

So, when her time came, Lorelei knew that it was all going to be okay. Because wherever she would go. Whether it's a void or an astral Elysium or nothing, it was better than waiting.

Years later, her great uncle died. Lorelei, again, wasn't exactly surprised. Despite not knowing much about him due to the trauma being a veteran caused, Isaac Xian had terrible habits. He loved his steak and cigarettes. And Lorelei always figured that one of them would kill him, and it did.

Lorelei watched the entire funeral. It was off because normally she was an emotional child. Exhibit A: Lorelei couldn't even say goodbye at her mother's open casket because she was too scared to see her mother like that. But her uncle, was a nobody to her. So, she was able to stare down at his corpse, fake a pray, and go on her merry little way.

So, the before and after death, that was something she was used to.

However, when Lorelei came by to Martha Kent's house early one morning and saw her struggle and eventual acceptance of the circle of existence. Lorelei freaked out.

She ran straight to school and tried to play off the entire day like nothing happened. As if the heart and soul of Smallville didn't just croak in front of her eyes.

But as they lowered Martha's casket, right next to her beloved husband's, Lorelei knew she had to push aside her feelings. Things were no longer about her.

Lorelei stared at the remaining Kent family that consisted of Martha's son, daughter-in-law, and lastly her two grandsons, Jordan and Jonathan.

Lorelei was the same age as them and every time Martha thought they would come visit Smallville, she would say the same words. In hopes that the young girl she considered to be family would show her real one the beauty of their small town and somehow become close.

But each Kent always seemed to busy. Every weekend or holiday trip back to Clark's hometown was always postponed and cancelled. Never allowing Lorelei to even meet the other Kents. Only through photos and stories that Martha would tell her, when she was feeling particularly upset at her family's absence.

"Look out for them, Lorelei."

It just had to take the death of the great Martha Kent for Lorelei to finally fulfill her promise.
