The smell.
It was Shoyo.
Looking up, you saw a shaking Hinata, clutching you like it was the one thing he’d ever loved. It broke your heart, seeing the tears dropping down his face at a fast pace. He opened his eyes, wide and full of relief.
“...Shoyo?” you questioned, tears fogging up your vision as well, eyes as wide as could be.
“GOD DAMMIT F/N YOU COULD’VE GOTTEN KILLED YOU DUMBASS!” he cried out, tightening his already strangle-like grip, “I-I, I was so worried! You can’t just do that to me! Dumbass, Dumbass, Dumbass!”
The words stunned you. He still cared. It rang bells in your head. You felt the tears dripping down your cheeks as you turned around, shoving your head into his chest. You knew. You knew right then and there.
“I missed you Shoyo!” you sobbed out, crying like a little kid who’d lost their mother, “I’m s-so sorry for being petty! I shouldn't have done that! I’m s-so sorry!”
The feeling of droplets falling on your head grew more, and more, and soon enough, it was raining, “I missed you too dumbass! Please, forgive me! I’m sorry as well!”
The crying in the rain lasted for a few more minutes before the fatigue from the running and not getting enough oxygen set in. Your lungs burned from the rain, craving a less humid air. Hinata placed you on his back, walking over to his tossed over bike on the sidewalk, picking it up, and riding the direction of your shared neighborhood.
Holding on to him like a sloth holding onto a tree branch, you held on to him tightly, not wanting to let go as a fear of losing him again. The bike ride in the rain lasted for about 15-20 minutes before Hinata turned into your driveway, getting off the bike and standing it up. He held onto your legs and knocked on the door, your mom opening the door to see Hinata and you, drenched and quiet.
“Shoyo? What are you doing here? It’s been so long since you came over!” she inquired, hurrying the two of you in.
“I know Mrs. L/N, I need to bring them upstairs, we’ll talk later, okay?” Hinata took off his shoes, slipping off your own as well, rushing up to your room.
“O-Okay! Will you be staying for dinner?” she asked.
“Yes!”

The year flew by as the two of you became best friends once more, even entering the same school high school. You’d talked out your problems with him and resolved them with Hinata. Slowly but surely, you’d started to fall in love with him. It was almost too subtle of a change to notice, until butterflies rose into your stomach, and you were long gone. So here you were, writing in your journal about what you finally realized the night before while you tossed and turned, thinking about Hinata.
Hey Journal,
I’m in love with someone, his name? Hinata Shoyo. My childhood best friend. The boy that was my best friend, to the boy I hated, to the boy I fell in love with. I really love him, I just hope he likes me back, I have a chance because I don’t think any people in my class have a crush on him. I also have our friendship, that might help. But… I don’t want to lose him… So I can’t even have him. I hate everything that’s running through my mind right now.
Goodbye,
June 13th, 2012
You finished writing the sentence in your orange and black striped notebook, looking out the window, the fresh leaves on the trees blowing around with the branches. The alarm on your phone went off and it reminded you that you needed to go to school. Picking up the journal, you shoved your things into your bag haphazardly, not caring what was being thrown in. Intrusive thoughts popped into your head as you slid your shoes on, racing to school. As you ran you saw the familiar bike that had the same route as you everyday, making your face light up in a blush.
“Good morning Shoyo,” you greeted stiffly with a smile, merging onto the same path that the bike rode on, causing the redhead to tip around trying to stop. He finally went to a stop and turned to face your shorter body.
“Oh, hi! Would you like to walk with me?” he invited, noticing your locked moodset immediately, trying to get you to relax.
A nod came from you, a small smile formed on your face, relaxing you slightly. He walked with his bike next to you on the trail, silently relishing in each other’s presence. The wind blew your hair across your forehead, swishing it around in sync with Hinata’s messy orange locks. Hinata smiled at the sight of your hair swishing, thinking it made your face look so contrasted with the stoic expression on it. In all the years you’d been friends, it’d never been this quiet, even when you’d started hating each other, but now the two of you were friends again, so why…?
“How are you doing this morning?” you asked suddenly, breaking the silence. The boy was caught off guard, but still responded quickly.
“I’m doing good now that I have my best friend to talk with,” he smiled, causing a blush to intensify itself on your cheeks, “How are you doing?”
You took a minute to think about it before sighing, averting your eyes, “I’ve had a revelation.”
This caught the attention of the redhead walking next to you, hands on the bike handles, “What’s that? Revelation… Doesn’t that mean you realized something?”
A quick nod came from you, stopping in your tracks to look at him nervously, “Yes.”
“So…. What did you realize?” Hinata curiously asked, stopping his bike to gaze into your eyes, knowing you wouldn’t be able to lie like that. Everything around him froze when he saw the tears forming in your eyes. You turned your head away so he wouldn’t see them, but he’d already seen them.
“I’m in love with someone I don’t think feels the same.”
The words stuck in his mind like glue, a frozen memory in his mind. Before he realized what you’d said, the tears started pouring out of your eyes, snapping him out of his trance like state.
“F-F/N! Oh my gosh, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to make you cry! Who is it? What do they look like?” Hinata hurriedly asked, pulling you into his arms protectively, dropping the bike next to time. Burying your head into his chest, you mumbled something he only heard two words of.
“.........Orange……...Volleyball……”
His eyes widened, the tears of yours staining his uniform. He knew what you meant. A smile grew onto his face as he lifted your head with his hand, cupping your crying face. He leaned in, capturing your lips with his own. Eyes widening, you felt the red-head cup your head with his other hand, deepening the kiss. Shutting your eyes, you wrapped your hands around his torso, bringing the two of you closer together. Hinata pulled away, leaving you dazed and slightly confused.
“I love you too, F/N, Don't want you worried 'bout a thing I know you'd do the same for me…” Hinata told you, “'Cause you're so lovely, you're so lovely, I can't help but fall for you, love. "
The tears still poured down your cheeks, now a smile on your lips, “You really mean it?” you asked, him nodding in response, “I’m glad.”
The two of you parted, rubbing the back of your necks nervously, “Um, let’s get to school, would you like to ride on the back of my bike?”
The blush on your face intensified as you nodded, the boy picking up his bike, getting onto it. Hopping on the back, you held onto his torso, the boy quickly made his way to school. You could hear his heartbeat. The two of you rode. In love. Happy. And now old enough to see the love that was there for years.
