Chapter 11 | The Search for Byakuya

Start from the beginning

"Yeah!" Makoto exclaims.

I don't get why he's agreeing with Byakuya. Couldn't be me.

"It's just something to keep in mind." Byakuya adds.

"Yea-what?" Makoto stops himself from agreeing.

"If I decide to fight, of course I'll come up with something original. Otherwise, this game of ours will be totally boring, right? It's not often you get to take part in such a high-stakes, high-tension activity. So if you're going to do it, you have to make sure it's entertaining. Mhmhmhm..." Byakuya explains.

I could feel myself getting angrier and angrier with every word that fell out of his stupid mouth. "A game"!? Is that really all he sees this as? A game!? I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked to see Naomi out of the corner of my eyes. She was giving me a look that says. "Calm down. Don't act on your anger. You'll regret it later." I take a deep breath and try to calm down.

"What the fuck do you mean, "game"!? That's fucked up!" Mondo shouts.

Looks like I didn't need to say anything.

"But it is a game. It's a game of life and death, which can have only one winner. That's all there is to it." Byakuya tells Mondo.

His arms were crossed and there was a calm expression on his face.

"He is right. It's a zero-sum game." Celeste says.

"Huh?" Makoto asks.

"It is a part of game theory, a mathematical model. In game theory, what we are going through now is called a "zero-sum game". In this type of game, in order for one person to gain something, another must necessarily lose something. In other words, it is a situation in which participants must compete for position or resources." Celeste explains.

"You mean like...a kind of elimination match." Sakura says.

"Entrance exams, sports tournaments, job openings - most social interactions fall into this category. Everyone must scramble to obtain something which is limited. For you succeed, someone else must fail. This also applies to the school life we have been subjected to here. In this case...our "limited resource" is that only one of us can successfully become the blackened." Celeste explains.

"So, this game was designed from the beginning to force one of us to try and defeat all the others." Byakuya said.

"Th-That...that can't be what they had in mind!" Makoto exclaims.

"This is why adaptation is so crucial. If those who want to escape were able to disappear, there would be no reason to continue playing the game." Says Celeste.

She has a smile on her lips and her left hand is just above her mouth as she looks at all of us while talking.

"But why would I want to stop playing? It's so much fun..." Byakuya says.

He has this stupid smile on his face that makes me want to punch him. The smile seemed so...evil. It looked similar to Celeste's. I swear, I've never wanted to punch two people as much as I what to punch them in my life.
