“River what are you doing here?” I whispered as he knelt next to me.
“I came so we could work on the project and saw you being thrown into a wall.” He stated stiffly. “What’s going on here?”
“Nothing, I tripped.” I said wincing as he wrapped his arm around my waist lifting me off the ground.
“Your lying Brielle.” I he said taking my face gently in his hands inspecting what I am now expecting to be my face bruising.
“Its none of your business.” I said pushing his hand away. “Boys why don’t you go to your room and do your homework ok?” I said pushing them up the stairs ahead of me hoping River would go away and drop the subject but I was out of luck when I heard his steps following me up the stairs waiting till the boys were in their room to start talking again.
“Bri, tell me what’s going on here, please.” He said touching my arm gently and I ushered him gently into my room turning my old radio on hearing the chorus of Confides cover of such great heights comforted me and I motioned for him to sit down on the wooden stool at my desk and I sat down heavily on the floor quickly telling him my story.
River’s P.O.V.
I sat there in Brielle’s room trying to keep my hands from shaking with rage when she lifted her shirt up to show me the bruises that were spread out across her ribcage and stomach. She told me everything even though I could tell it pained her to confide in someone she barely knew. I listened intently as she told me about her parents abandoning her, how the abuse started almost immediately after she was put into this system, how no one wanted to adopt her because something seemed off about her, and how she took extra beatings from Crystal so the little kids would be left alone. As she finished her story the front door closed down stairs and someone was running up the stairs.
A young girl burst into Brielle’s waving a paper around jumping up and down. “I won Bri, I won the essay contest!” she said hugging the now standing Brielle.
“I am so proud of you Mel, what did you win?” Bri asked smiling but the girl had spotted me and had stopped smiling standing behind Bri slightly and she patted the girls back. “It’s ok Mel this is my friend River he’s ok I promise.”
“I won $20, I’m going to do my home work.” Mel said in a small voice rushing out of the room closing the door silently behind her. I heard heavy footsteps on the stairs and grunting and Bri told me to hid in the closet and to be very quiet just as the door burst open.
Brielle’s P.O.V
I had just gotten River in my closet when Crystal burst into my room breathing heavily. “Where are the other three kids?” She slurred
“In their rooms doing their homework.” I said softly looking down and pulled my head back roughly.
“You look at me when I’m talking to you girl, you get those kids packed and ready to go now their new parents will be here in a few minutes to pick them up.” She sneered slapping me. “Then it will be just you and me again.”
I nodded quickly and watched her head back down the stairs to her room and I walked silently to the twins’ room. “Guys get packed and cleaned up, your new mom and dad will be here to get you soon.” I told them softly before knocking on Mel’s door. “Mel it’s time for you to pack and get ready to leave.”
“Are we running away?” she asked me excitedly.
“No honey you’ve been adopted and are being picked up soon.” I saw her face fall slightly and I knew she was worried about me. “I’ll be fine Mel but you have to get packed right now they will be here any minute now.” I walked silently out of the room closing my door quietly behind me laying face down on my bed. I heard the closet door creak as River came out and sit next to me.
“Are you ok Bri?” He asked in a gentle voice and I nodded. I felt his hands on my waist and he lifted me up so I was leaning on his shoulder I was so caught off guard that I didn’t notice Crystal come back into my room.
River’s P.O.V
“You little whore.” She shrieked dragging Brielle off the bed and banging her head into the wall. I jumped off the bed pulling Crystal away from Bri.
“Don’t touch her!” is the last thing I remember saying before I shifted. Through my new eyes I saw Crystal run in fear and when I looked at Bri I could see shock cross her face.
“You’re a werewolf?” she asked before she passed out and I noticed the blood gushing from her head.
