Mr Ral looked from Levi to the box. He slowly opened it and looked through the belongings that Petra had. There wasn't much. A hairbrush, letters from her father and her mother's ring. Mr Ral looked at the ring for a second and brought it to his lips, kissing it gently. First his wife and now his daughter. He had lost them both.
"There's something else," Levi reached into his pocket and pulled out a patch of tanned cloth with the Wings of Freedom stitched into it. "This is a piece of Petra's jacket," he explained, handing it to the man. Mr Ral took it and brought the cloth to his nose. Indeed, it had his daughter's scent.
Without thinking, Mr Ral stood to his feet, his arms wrapped tightly around Levi, whose eyes widened in surprise. You stood, watching the scene, part of you was relieved that Mr Ral didn't hit him.
"Please, exterminate those Titans," Mr Ral begged, pulling away to look between you. "Don't let my daughter's death be for nothing," he wiped his eyes. He had cried and he would cry some more but he would cry when you and Levi had left.
"Of course," Levi nodded and Mr Ral returned it.
"I'm terribly sorry, Mr Ral, for your loss," you butted in. "And I don't mean to make it seem like we're in a hurry to leave but I'm afraid this isn't the only visit we need to make today," you explained, walking over to Levi. Mr Ral nodded his head in understanding.
"Thank you, for telling me in person," Mr Ral was aware of the letters families received. He had been dreading the day he received one, but he was content that the news had been delivered in person, even if another part of him had been lost.
You and Levi left the house without much of anything else to say to the man. Mr Ral remained in the living room while you and Levi showed yourself to the door. You both climbed back onto your horses. Levi released a heavy breath while you sucked in a deep breath. Never before had something felt so horrible to tell others.
"Where to next?" you asked with a small frown.
"Oluo's parents," Levi answered.
You had hoped the families of Oluo, Gunther and Eld would be as accommodating and understanding as Mr Ral had been but things don't always work out the way you initially hoped. Oluo's parents screamed and shouted at the two of you. They were heavily in denial and his father had chased you from the house after you had set the belongings down while his mother wept on the floor.
Gunther's mother had accepted the news in a shocked state. She stared at the box she had been given with wide eyes. She didn't move, she didn't want to move, it appeared as though she were still trying to process what she had been told. His father, however, had made a move straight for Levi. His fist connected with Levi's face, which shocked you and you had to pull the man from Levi, much to his anger.
Eld's parents said nothing to either of you after you told them the news. They simply sat at their kitchen table after you had explained everything to them and looked through the box that you had given them. Levi tried to give his apologies but Eld's father didn't want to hear it. Still, he was respectful enough to ask you to leave in a more respectful way than Gunther's father.
By the time you made it back to the base, the sun had already set and nightfall was among you. You jumped off Blue and gently guided him back into his stable, giving him a treat for his hard work. The horse nudged you gently with his nose, as if trying to comfort you and you gave a small smile.
Levi, having forgotten about his leg for a brief moment, climbed off his horse and due to the weight, he put on his injury, fell to the ground of the stable. His horse moved away from the sudden noise and you quickly caught his reins and guided him back into his own stable before removing them and giving him a treat.
