Kenma Kozume had always been small, it was hard to discern the normal from abnormal with him, the assumption from the truth. His best friend, Tetsuro Kuroo was always there to take care of him when they were younger. Kuroo made sure Kenma ate, slept, bathed and did anything other than playing any of his games that he was so addicted to. When Kuroo left for college, there wasn't someone there telling Kenma to take care of himself, no one there to make sure he was ok. No one else ever cared, not as much as Kuroo at least, not even his parents, who were overseas at the time.
. . .
Kenma had always liked Kuroo, a lot. Kuroo was his only real friend. Kenma liked keeping to himself, Kuroo didn't mind. Even now, Kuroo would always check in on Kenma with a phone call, every day, and Kenma would give the same response of "I'm fine," whether it was true or not, usually the latter. Kenma had isolated himself from everyone but Kuroo, becoming dependent on his long-distanced friend. Kenma never left his house unless it was essential, and with his parents overseas, he didn't talk to anyone other than Kuroo, and he spent more time thinking about Kuroo than he'd like to admit.
. . .
Kuroo would be coming home soon for Christmas break, Kenma knew this. He also knew Kuroo would want to see his other friends, like Bokuto, Akaashi, and even Tsukishima, along with his family. Kenma wouldn't be getting his undivided attention like he had hoped; he knew he'd have to accept that. Kenma didn't own a car, nor did he want to, he didn't trust them and the only reason he would use one would be to visit Kuroo. Kenma didn't mind, but the distance from his house to Kuroo would be too far to walk.
. . .
Days passed turning into weeks, and before Kenma knew it there was a knock on his door. He paused his game, got up from the couch and opened the door. "Miss me!?" to Kenma's surprise he saw Kuroo, having not changed in the slightest, beaming down at him, with his messy dark hair and piercing amber eyes. Kenma had always found Kuroo attractive, now he was reminded why. "You're early!" Kenma was never a loud person, but it was hard to contain his excitement. Kuroo tilted his head, "Early? Kenma what day do you think it is?" "Would you like to come in?" Kenma asked, avoiding the question. It was true Kenma had lost track of time, he didn't sleep or eat much so sometimes a day felt like two to him, three felt like one or four felt like a week, Kenma was lately not the best with time.
Kuroo entered briskly, but before he was completely through the door, he received a text.
Bokuto:
Hey Hey Hey!!!!!!!
Kuroo smiled as he replied:
What's up?
Bokuto:
Nothing much, I'm excited to see you!
Kuroo:
Well right now I'm with Kenma...
Kenma, reading over Kuroo's shoulder, smiled at this.
Bokuto:
Say no more! I'll leave you two alone.
"Have you eaten today?" Kuroo asked, he hadn't, and didn't want to admit it, but Kuroo was one person Kenma could never lie to. "No...I-I haven't..." Kenma stuttered "Kenma..." Kuroo sighed with a guilting disappointment, "It's past noon," he continued. "I-I know that...I-I'm just...not hungry..." Kenma replied, he had in fact been hungry, but like every day, he ignored the pain in his stomach telling him to eat. Kuroo, not taking no for an answer, cooked Kenma a meal.
"It's really good!" Kenma said with a full mouth.
"REALLY GOOD? You've barely had three bites!"
