"Come on Charles." I was awoken by voices coming from the street. I must have dozed off earlier, I looked at the huge clock in the corner of the room to discover most of the day had passed me by.
"Elenor, it's not my problem. You can't come groveling back to me every time someone threatens you." I recognized the low voice as Vane and got to my feet to peer out the window. He was standing in the street with the blond woman I recognized from the tavern.
"Charles there's somthing between us. I know you can feel it." I could hear the deviusness in her voice as she reached out for him. I felt a mixture of emotions I couldn't decipher as I made my way to the door. If I had to be 'his' he better expect to be 'mine' this was a two way street. I slipped out the door quietly not to draw their attention.
"No Elenor there's somthing between us when you want to betray me. I'm not falling victim to your games." He stepped away and I watched the woman huff in annoyance.
"Charles." They both spun to look at me as I gulped I hadn't thought this far ahead.
"I need you in the house for a secound I can't reach the flour." I used my smaller height as an excuse as what seemed like relief washed over his features.
"Oh I see how it is. You're going to go play husband with her." There was venom in her voice as he took a step towards me.
"She doesn't know you like I do!" She was clearly grasping at straws now while Charles continued to walk towards me.
"Does she know about us? Does she know about all the violent things you've done?! If she did she wouldn't be inviting you into her home! Does she know about the brand on your chest?!" At the mention of the brand he froze. I could see the internal battle in his eyes to turn back and confront her. I saw the snarl on her face knowing she had hit a nerve.
"Oh she doesn't? When were you going to tell your wife you were a slave?" She sneered but before he could confront her I stepped forward taking his arm to pull him towards the door.
"Don't turn back. Don't give her what she wants." I whispered as he let me guide him.
"When all this falls apart Charles you know where I am." With that she turned on her heal and began to stomp away. When we got inside I motioned for him to take a seet. I knew more than Elenor had thought, the stories of the grousome Charles Vane, the mark on his chest, they all had a place in the history books. He took a seet in the chair I had vacated to go outside.
"You don't have to explain anything. I already know." I tried to put him at ease but instead he looked up alarm in his eyes.
"What do you know?" He squinted as Ibsighed realizing I probably should have just left it. I pulled out the opposing seet and sat down.
"As you know I came from England. We'll while I was there I attended one of the best schools in the world." I cleared my throat knowing that it made me sound pretentious.
"We had a history class and in one of the books it had talked about the history of slave traiders and the different clans that had partaken in such activities. That mark was featured in it." I nodded at the area hidden under his shirt where the brand would be.
"Plus all you most violent plunders were probably exaggerated and used my mothers to scare their children into good behavior." I shrugged as he continued to stare.
"And you're not frightened?" He stared with such intensity I could tell he was searching my eyes for honesty.
"Come on you only what a few years older than me? I was long past the scary stories when you really came to fame." I grinned trying to break the dark mood that had lapsed over us.
"You didn't say anything." His voice wasn't accusatory but more of statement.
"What?" I cocked my head in question.
"Yesterday. I saw your eyes land on it when I told about how I came to be in Nassau. You didn't say anything." I nodded following his train of thought.
"I figured if you had wanted me to know you would have told me." I explained while fixing the edge of the table cloth so it lay flat against the old wood table. We sat in silence, not an uncomfortable one where your scrambling to find somthing to fill it but a calming one. I thought back to what Elenor had said about her and Charles, the thing between them. However I decided to brush it off we all had at least one crazy ex.
"Oh I've been meaning to talk to you." I snapped my fingers as my previous thoughts came back.
"Divorce.... like I'm not saying I want one. Unless you do. But it's somthimg to think about. Up until yesterday I had never even seen you in person and now... Well all I'm saying is I know you probably don't want to be tied down and I just wanted to know your thoughts." I held my breath as I waited for his reaction, I had just word vomited all over him.
"I hadn't thought of it. Divorce isn't very common here." That's it? What about the death sentence the name Vane carried with it?
"What are you saying?" I prodded carefully.
"I'm saying for the time being, you're my wife and we should see where this goes." He sat there so calmly gaging my reaction.
"You're saying you want to stay? With me?" I felt a small tang of excitement at the thought. I had never done anything so rash in my quite sheltered life.
"If you want to." He tilted his head back lazily waiting for my response. I had so many reasons to go our seperate ways, right her right now yet for some reason I felt my lips form a different answer.
"Yes." I couldn't explain my choice but it felt right. We may be doing this terribly out of order but it was worth a try.
At my answer I could have sworn I saw the great Charles Vane crack a grin.
