"For Survival"

Chapter 1

"You okay back there Maisie?" Owen asked from the driver's seat. "Yeah, I'm good." She said quietly from the backseat. In reality, she was terrified. She had just met these people and they seemed nice, but by now this girl has developed some trust issues. I mean, she trusted Eli Mills, right? She knew that they cared about her or else they would've left her at the mansion. Claire knew that Maisie must have been thinking these things. After the night she'd been through, Maisie was going to have some questions. The girl just found out she was a CLONE! How would you feel? Anyways, they just pulled up to Owen's trailer and it seemed like an ideal place to avoid the dinosaurs that were now roaming the country. It was right next to a lake, so if they needed a way to escape some dinos that would be a good place to go. "Are there any dinosaurs out there," Maisie asked still traumatized from the night she just went through. "I don't think there are any and if there were, we probably scared them when we pulled up." Claire lied. In her defense, don't most adults lie to kids? So they got out of the car and went inside the trailer. Claire was kinda surprised because she never had been inside the trailer before and it was not as small as she'd imagined. There was a bedroom, a living room, a bathroom, and a small kitchen. "Hey Owen, can I talk to you outside for a minute?" Claire asked. "Sure." He replied. So while they went outside, Maisie like any other nine-year-old child, went to the door and put her ear to it so she could hear everything they said. This sounds like me when I was nine. Anyway, back to Claire and Owen. "So, what did you want to talk to me about?" Owen asked. "I just...I'm worried about taking care of Maisie." She admitted. "Why?" He asked. "You know I'm not that good with kids," Claire said. "What do you..." Then he suddenly had a flashback to three years ago. When Claire had attempted to spend the weekend with her nephews. As if reading his mind she said, "They almost died because of me." "Claire, if it wasn't for you, those boys wouldn't be alive," Owen said. "They would have been fine, I'm the one who put them in danger," Claire said sadly. "So it must've been another extremely hot redhead that ran in front of a T-Rex in HEELS just to save her nephews," Owen said hoping she would drop the Jurassic World subject because she was so hard on herself. "Okay, I never said I did it just to save my nephews." She said looking at Owen wondering if he felt the same way. "You know a huge reason we broke up was that you didn't want to live in a trailer," Owen said. "I've been wanting to talk to you about that, I just want you to know I'm open to the idea of us getting back together if that's what you want." She said rushed as if he might stop her. At this point, Owen couldn't be happier. He had been wanting to talk to Claire about the same exact thing but didn't know how she'd react. But he tried to play it cool. "I would also be open to that." Owen said feeling like he'd just won a million dollars. "But for Maisie's sake I think we should take things slow," Claire said relieved that Owen said yes. "I agree." Owen said, then they headed back inside. Meanwhile, Maisie was still listening at the door and heard everything. The most her brain could figure out was that the two of them had dated before and it had not gone well. "From now on I'll be they're personal matchmaker." She promised herself. She got back on the couch before they came back inside so they would never know she heard their conversation. "Ok Maisie, let's find you a place to sleep." Claire said.
