Steve Rogers X Stark!Reader - Piece of Me

Start from the beginning

"You're Tony's sister, right?" You nodded, shifting your weight between you feet as though you were about to dart back into the safety of the kitchen. "I'm Steve."

Your tongue darted out to wet your lips, and you quickly cleared your throat. "I just made a pot of coffee," you started softly. "Would you like one?"

Steve's smile grew, and he nodded. "That'd be great."

"Cool," you uttered, copying his nod for a moment. "Wonderful," you added, shaking yourself out of the trance you seemed to have fallen into and hurrying back into the kitchen. As you poured the coffee, you took a deep breath. This wasn't you. You weren't some shy little wall flower, and you didn't get all awkward because I guy was hot. Get it together. With another deep breath, you gathered up the mugs and moved back out into the sitting room.

Steve took one from you, lifting it to his nose and taking a deep breath. "God, you're a lifesaver," he told you, taking a quick sip before setting it down next to his laptop.

You sat down in one of the plush armchairs, tucking your legs up under yourself as you cradled the mug. "Whatcha working on?"

"Nothing," he answered, a little too quickly for your own liking. "Research," he added with a small shrug.

"Confidential stuff, huh?" A half smile pulled at your lips as you began your teasing, your eyebrows lifting slightly.

He shrugged again. "Not confidential. Just a little-" he paused, his face scrunching up. "It feels embarrassing to be researching how to function in modern society."

A small chuckle fell from your lips. "God, if you find an article that explains it, would you send me the link?"

Steve looked a little confused, his brow furrowing as you took a sip from your drink. "I don't-"

"If you put my name into google, my entire life gets spread out for you to see. Date of birth; mother's maiden name; the schools I went to; every man I've ever dated. It's all there." You paused for a moment,  shrugging. "Modern society sucks, and I've still not quite figured it out."

He stayed quiet for a moment, nodding slightly. "I get it." He released a deep breath. "I can't go anywhere at the moment without people trying to ask me questions. No one knew who I was before, and now it's like I can't even walk down the street without being recognised."

You watched him carefully. "That's why you're always here, right? Free Wi-fi and no public?"

A small smile pulled at Steve's lips. "Kinda. Tony offered it up as a research base. Said he had better access than the libraries. The no public thing was just a nice bonus." He watched as you nodded. "The coffee and company is pretty nice too."

It seemed as though in that moment, you realised that you had interrupted his work, quickly getting to your feet. "I should let you get back to it-"

"Could I ask a favour?" You hesitated, nodding. "Tony gave me a list of stuff to look up, and I can't find some of it-" Steve held up his notebook, a small frown on his lips.

You held out your hand, taking it from him and scanning the page. A small bubble of laughter fell from your lips as you read the list. "This is a list of made up events-" you paused for a moment. "For the most part, anyway." You reached out and picked up a pen, settling back into your seat. You scratched out a few of the listed events, before flipping the page and beginning to scrawl out a list of your own.

Y/N's list of important research:

1) Civil Rights Movement.

2) Moon  Landing.

3) The Cold War.

4) Stonewall/Pride.

You paused for a moment, tapping the pen against your lips as you thought. "I've got a couple of topics for you here, but there's so much more-"

"You don't have to-" he started, pausing when you waved your hand at him.

"I get so bored sitting around here all day. This is a break from the monotony," you insisted. "How about we swap numbers and you can text me if you have any questions?" Steve nodded, watching as you scribbled down your number. "And then we can meet here for coffee a couple times a week and you can tell me what you've been reading."

Steve chuckled, his eyes fixed on you as you quickly glanced up at him. "You're a proper little teacher, huh?"

You snorted, shaking your head at him. "I wanted to teach when I was younger, but my dad thought I should do something bigger-" you paused for a moment, nibbling at your bottom lip. "I was going to go back to school and get my qualifications, but then Tony started doing all the Iron Man stuff, and the media started trying to paint me as this wild child, and I decided it wouldn't work out. I mean, who wants the woman who made headlines for punching a photographer looking after their kids?"

"Well, I'm a very willing student."

You smiled at him, closing the notebook and slipping it back onto the table. "Then you'd better get on with your work," you told him, standing up and giving him a little wave as you made a hasty exit.
