I kicked and strained against the arms of my ex-wife's husband and another, less important cop. That damn Humburglar set me up again, making me seem like a guilty man. I thrashed, trying to make them let go. I glared at Mark, the man who my wife had cheated on me with and had destroyed my marriage. He had a smug look on his face.
"What's with that grin?" I stopped wriggling and snarled, causing him to turn his head and frown.
"I don't know what you're talking about," his smooth, monotone voice annoyed me to my very core.
"Oh, don't play dumb with me. That's the same grin you gave me when Anne told me that she was leaving me for you," I spat.
"Ah, that grin," he grinned sneeringly, "it's just because I find the situation funny."
"What's so funny about this?"
"Well, I'm arresting my wife's ex-husband for arson, all the while he looks like the clown he truly is."
"Mark-"
"That's 'Officer Mark King' to you," he practically barked out at me. I rolled my eyes.
"Fine. Officer Mark King, had I not already been arrested- falsely, may I add- for arson, I would be arrested for assault due that comment."
"Lovely. I'm sure the jury will love to hear about how you threatened me, as well," malice entered his tone. Before I could get another word out, his partner spoke.
"Mister McDonald, I suggest you stop talking. We read you your rights earlier, and you are only harming your own credibility at this point," his soft, disappointed tone shut me up. He looked as old as me, but he sounded just like my father back when I was in highschool. I sighed a little, feeling bad for him.
"What's your name?" I looked at him, no malice or hate in my eyes.
"Me?" He asked, pointing to himself with his semi-free hand.
"Yes, you. What is your name?"
"I'm Officer Jackson Wilde, sir."
"Officer Jackson Wilde," I mumbled, nodding. He didn't deserve to be partnered with the tool of a man that was Mark. "I'm sorry you had to witness this. I'm also sorry that you had to lasso me in."
"Oh, uh, it's fine I guess? I've always wanted to use my lassoing skills. And this is just how my job is, you know?"
"Indeed, still though, I feel bad that you had to be here to witness... Well, all of this. And that you're paired up with someone like that."
"Oh, it's okay. He and I have sort of a good-cop, bad-cop thing going on, so it's a fun dynamic."
"Are you calling me a bad cop Jackson?" Mark snapped, turning his head to glare at Jackson.
"N-not at all, sir! I was just saying that you tend to be harsher and-"
"Save it. We'll talk about it later," he hissed, making Jackson flinch. The poor man probably had some trauma that Mark was only worsening. "Anyways, we're here now. Jackson, load him into the back seat. I'll tell dispatch that we've secured him."
"Roger that, sir," Jackson nodded, and Mark let go. I didn't run. I couldn't run in my big clown shoes. I would fall on my face. I just quietly got in the car and awaited the lengthy drive to the holding cells that Humburglar told me all about.
(Hello and welcome to the end of the first chapter. I wrote this chapter as an assignment for Creative Writing, but thought it would do great as a multi-part fic. Hope you all enjoyed! Also, if my teacher is reading this: Hi ma'am! Your class is my favourite!!)
