I wrap my hand with bandages to try and cover up the bruises on my left hand from combat. Suddenly my friend Zara comes rushing into the room looking giddier than usual. She launches at me forcing me into a tight hug.
"What happened?" I ask.
"You happened." she replies smiling like the maniac she is.
"What did I do?"
Zara smiles. "Your being shipped out!"
I stare at her in disblelief. "How do you know?"
"I heard it."
I raise an eyebrow skeptically. "How?"
Zara stares at the ground, twisting her hands together.
"Were you eavesdropping again?" I ask.
She purses her lips together. I sigh.
"It was on accident." she says "I was on my way to weapons training and wasn't paying attention so I took a wrong turn and ended up in front of one of the main meeting rooms. I was going to leave but then I heard them mention your name so I sort of lingered by the door for a bit and that's how I heard."
It's still too good to be true. Getting an assignment before you finish training was pretty rare.
"Are really sure it's me they were talking about?" I say doubtfully, "I mean Aaron's a common name."
"Positive," Zara replies. "I mean they didn't technically say your name. They said your soldier number. 532, right?"
This is still questionable I mean why me?
"Isn't it exciting?" Zara sqeals.
"Why me?" I ask "I'm not even that high in rank"
"Your second."
"I'm fourth. If they wanted to pick someone why not Adam."
She rolls her eyes at me as if she can't believe I'm that stupid.
"Adam's in first right? Well they're probably going to make him keep training. Same thing with Evan and Will isn't good at keeping secrets. He's blow his cover before we could get any information." she list the faults off on her fingers.
She's right about Adam. They're trying to train him to be a rebel leader. Same with Evan and she's not wrong about Will he was in first on ranks for a while and he wouldn't shut up about it for days.
Even though it couldn't be true, it was exciting to think about. I've been living in the rebel's underground training facility for practically my whole life. It'll be nice to see the outside world for once.
Zara lies down on the floor.
"You're so lucky. I wish I was higher rank then I could come with you." She sighs.
"You are high rank." I insist.
"I'm in seventh." she complains, "That may be high but it's not high enough to get me out of here."
She sits up and crosses her legs.
"All I'm good at is throwing knives. I have to wait until they plan another attack to get to go out." Zara laments.
"Hey," I say "No one here can throw knives like you can."
She looks over at me and asks, "Why must you think so highly of me?"
"I'm your best friend remember," I say quietly "That's my job."
Zara closes her eyes and smiles. "Yeah you're right."
Suddenly the door opens with a slam. A tall man wearing a rebel uniform comes in. I notice the gleaming golden badge on his chest.
"Soldier 532." the man remarks.
"Colonel Edmen." I acknowledge.
"Genreal Wolf would like to see you." the Colonel says.
It's funny the way he sounds like it's an invitation I can decline even though I'd most likely be punished for not showing appreciation to my leaders.
I stand up and begin to follow the him out the door when I glance back at Zara smiling and mouthing "Good luck."
I give her a nod and I follow Colonel Edmen out the door and to General Wolf's Office.
