Tom's phone rang about five minuets later. Glancing at the caller ID his beautiful features broke into a grimsnce.
" I have to get this. If I don't I would be in a lot of trouble." He took a deep breath and answered it. " Luke-" the poor man didn't even get to finish his sentence.
" Where the hell are you, I've been trying to call you for the last eighteen hours and now there's pictures of you floating around making out with some woman on the street! Don't even get me started on the fact the the press is already having a field day with these photos! What the hell makes you think that it would be OK? You couldn't even get me a heads up? No. Instead you go off the grid all goddamn day. Just get your ass to my office and we'll sort all of this out." Luke was shouting and I could hear every word.
" I will be there as soon as I can."
"Ten minutes Tom otherwise I'm going to let you sort this out on your own. " He hung up.
" I'll drive you home. I am so sorry. How much of that did you hear?"
" All of it. Tom don't worry about it I don't want you to get into any more trouble than you're already in. "
"I promise you won't get me in any more trouble." I shook my head and kissed his cheek.
" I'll see you later Tom." With that I wandered away left alone with my thoughts. After getting on the tube I stood and let my mind wander.
What if Luke makes Tom break up with me? Tom wouldn't do that, would he? Maybe, maybe I'll just be another fling. Maybe my mother was right this whole thing is out of pity. God why was my mother always worming her way into my mind. How is it even after five years of living on my own without her help she can always find a way to belittle me and make me feel like I'm two inches tall. It's not fair that someone can have control over my life like that. All I want to do is live my life in peace and not have my mother's constant nagging in my head.
I got off the tube at my stop and walked the twenty feet to my place, Anne was sitting on the front steps, looking very uncomfortable and very pregnant.
"Don't sit like that. It can't be good for your back." Helping her stand was a chore. Anne is my best friend and at the time she was seven months pregnant with her first child.
"I can do whatever the hell I want. I'm a grown woman."
"You're a hormonal woman." I reminded her as she waddled inside.
"Where the hell have you been by the way. I have important information regarding my child and you were not here to share my excitement."
"I'm sorry, you know that date that I had last night?" She nodded, "well it kinda continued into this afternoon. We had an amazing time but the he got called into a meeting and had to cut the day short." I handed her a bowl of ice cream.
"I didn't ask for this."
"You didn't have too." I haven't told Anne who I was seeing because she would not approve of me dating celebrity. I'm not even sure I approve of my current relationship with a celebrity.
"Earth to Emma, I asked you a question."
"I'm sorry Anne, what was it?"
"Is this mystery man that saved you from depression last week and rescued Charlie from God knows what?" I nodded. "So are you guys exclusive now or what? He made you dinner last night and kept you out for most of the day today. Honey, you're dating. If he says you're not then I'm going to have to have a few choice words with him." She had finished her ice cream and set the bowl on the table. "What is mystery mans name?"
"You haven't told your friend what his name is. Emma honey you need to treat your friends with a little more respect otherwise you will lose the only good thing you have in this life." my mother was standing in the doorway of my living room.
"Mother, impeccable timing as always." She acted as though she hadn't heard me.
"Don't worry Anne dear, Emma can't hold down a decent man anyway. This one was more of a pity date than anything. How's the baby coming along dear, are you getting enough rest, is my daughter making sure that everything is going alright because God knows she won't give me a grandchild before I die. The lease she can do is help someone out that will be a great mother." I counted to ten in my head. She liked Anne better than me. Why I don't know or particularly care. I was more worried about the insults she was indirectly throwing at me.
"Mother, how did you get in here. I had the locks changed. Again."
"Do you honestly think that you can keep a mother out of her only child's life, I don't think so." She turned her back on me again. "Now when I was pregnant with my disappointment of a daughter over there I found that laying in my side versus my back was more comfortable." I got up to put the bowls in the sink. My phone vibrated in my pocket and I glanced at it quickly.
