In 2003 It happened. No one knew what to think. Okay maybe that's abit of a lie. Everyone was a little weirded out, I mean us humans, we could do so much more then what we could before. We had better alert skills. Better agility. It was like the human race became gods. But so did they. I mean that part at first wans'nt really a big deal. Especially when I never heard their screeches, but ya, it was a nightmare overall.

Oh who are they you ask? Simple, Insects. No really Insects. I swear to whatever god you believe in the Insects have taken over the world.  I know I sound out of my mind, as if sanity is slowly slipping away from me. But it's true! We don't know how it happened but they became huge, and not only that, but they became smarter. Now no one can do anything. I mean they all have these special screams that make people paralyzed to move.

But see I'm gona save the world. How? Simple. I can't hear. I can't hear their screams,  I'm deaf so to them I'm practically invincible. With the awesomeness that is my lack of hearing I'm gona save humanity! Now just to find out how....

(Mateo!) My mother signed.

(sorry) I signed back as I put the bread down. We know Asl. American sign language. It's a way of talking with your hands. You make gestures and they indicate words or letters. Since I'm deaf its how we communicate. My mama can hear perfectly fine though. So she only learned it for me. Same with my siblings. Sometimes I feel like I inconvenience them, but they assure this is not the case. I mean they wanted to learn it. For me.

(you have to wait until I split the bread evenly) she gave me a look. A motherly look that showed sternness.

(Mama  when can we leave the cave?) She sighed. And gave my siblings bread before handing me some. She looked at me.

(we can't leave the bunker it's not safe outside)

(but Mama!) I looked at her.

(sorry Mateo)

She continued feeding bread to my siblings. Since I talk with my hands I couldn't protest. That night I woke my sister Maria up and said goodbye. Regardless of what Mama thinks, I am going to save the world.

Oh I forgot to mention we live in a bunker. Because the beasts screams can't be heard underground. But again I'm gona fix the world. I don't know how yet, but I am, and I will! Just watch me!

.That night I packed up my things. I was ready to go.

I climbed up the latter. I opened the bunker lid.  I made my way across the desserted land. It was covered in rocks to a plentyfull extent, however it was also dusty and barren on the ground. Their I saw one. It  was huge I had never seen one in person before. It was fuzzy had four legs per side, and was running towards me. It had eight eyes and claws right below them, they were vibrating. I ran away and hid behind a boulder. I looked to my side. It seemed confused. It walked away in a daze.

I breathed in a sigh of relief. I was glad for my disability.  I panted for breath. I put my hand up to my chest...thank god.

I scavenged through my backpack. I saw a donut I had saved. Ya I didn't really think ahead before I planned this. But still! I'm the only one who can do this so why not just do it you know?

I stuffed the donut into my mouth.  I was eating when a girl approached me. She was talking but I could only make out part of what she was saying by reading her lips

"hey...you...food....listen"

I signed to her that I used asl she didn't respond. In stead she just sat down next to me.

She opened her hand in front of me as if asking for something. A thought occurred food! She must be hungry, looking at her she's pretty worn out. I mean she was wearing rags...I searched my backpack and pulled out some candy. I gave it to her. She laughed. Jumped up with glee, and then in a haist ran away. I sighed to myself against the boulder. (great just great, more food down the drain) I layed against the rock and fell asleep. The next day I wandered the dessert like land wishing I had brought water. Ever since 2003 when it happened us humans were given gifts, we can survive longer without water, we can, breath better, we have agility. But again so do they. My mind keeps wandering about what had happened. Why it happened? What could've happened? I don't know. Either way it's easier to breath.
