Chapter 11: Cookies + Close Calls

Start from the beginning

Both boys slammed the doors closed and they sat in silence as the car started and the engine warmed up. Karl dug through his bag making sure he had everything before they left and Nick was adjusting his mirrors to his awake postures liking, fixing his hair slightly. Nick didn't bother with spotify today and just turned on the radio as he looked over his shoulder to reverse out of his parking space.

A familiar melody started to play through the speakers, memorized guitar chords vibrated through the car.

"Oh my god, Clay is obsessed with this song-" Nick was cut off.

"Maybe it's the way she walked!" Karl screamed, "Straight into my heart and stole it!" Karl flipped his hair out if his eyes looking at Nick with star struck blue orbs. "Through the doors and past the guards, just like she already owned it!"

Karl doubled over laughing missing the next few lines. His amusement was cut short as he heard soft singing.

"And we danced all night to the best song ever," Nick smiled, eyes on the road, "We knew every line, now I can't remember!"

"How it goes but I know I won't forget her! As we danced all night to the best song ever!" Karl giggled as he danced in his seat slightly.

The two boys continued to sing and laugh until Nick stopped at a red light. "Oh shit, whose house are we going to?"

"Oh we can go to mine, it's this next light, take a left and then it's the first community." Karl leaned forward in his seat to look for the turn.

Nick nodded and pulled away from the white line right as the light turned green. The two talked about their days, Nick groaning about the onslaught of homework he had and how he was still sore from practice yesterday. Karl couldn't help but giggle at the boys facial expressions that were always exaggerated. Karl rattled off about how his film editing class was too easy since he already knew the stuff he was being taught thanks to Youtube.

"Oh and then there's the fact Alex won't stop bothering me about joining the track team. I mean the seasons already started it's too late to join," Karl sunk back into his chair, telling Nick that this was the community.

The taller boy chuckled as he used his left hand to pull in the same direction, the leather slipped back through his hand. He pulled up the drive way Karl pointed out and put the vehicle in park. They let the song finish before they rolled out of the car. Karl pulled his Adventure Time lanyard off of his neck and unlocked his door.

He let out a loud cheer, catching Nick off guard. "Home alone for the evening!"

Karl showed Sapnap around the house, offering him some juice and cookies, the two sat down on the couch as they figured out what they were going to do for the day.

"We can go play cards in my room, actually that sounds kind of boring," Karl sighed as he slumped off of the couch and onto the floor.

Nick chuckled as he put his phone back into his pocket. "Do you play chess?"

"No, but I've been wanting to learn how to play," Karl stared up at the boy.

Nick couldn't break the eye contact even if he wanted to. His mind started drifting, he was on a steep and slippery slope. "Do you have a board?" Nick asked, clearing his throat.

"Uh yeah, somewhere, lemme go look," Karl stood up and started looking through the cabinets of the living room.

Nicks eyes lingered over the colorful sugar addict, he watched as he pulled boxes out, the way the sunlight from the window bounced off of his cheekbones. His blue eyes sparkled. Karl presented the box to Nick.

"This is it, right?" Karl opened the box to peer inside, "I hope we have all the pieces."

Nick nodded standing up. Karl smiled and gave a small laugh, grabbed Nicks wrist, and dragged him upstairs to his bed room. He sat criss cross on the floor, leaning forward and patting the floor silently telling Nick to take a seat in front of him. Nick laughed at the lack of verbal communication as he sat on the floor. He opened the small cardboard box and grabbed the checkered board. He explained the basics of each piece as he set up the board.

Karl moved his pawn forward before his bishop was taken by Nicks queen.

"Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick," Karl groaned.

Nick bit his lip as he took a deep breath, he was angry at his brain. His mind couldn't help but wonder what it would sound like if Karl said his name, his voice broken. Nick laughed nervously.

"Here, let me look at the board from your point of view," Nick walked on his knees to kneel behind the other boy.

He tried to focus on the board, looking at the possible moves of all of Karl's pieces. His eyes continued to flicker back and forth, rooks and slightly parted lips fought for his attention. Karl radiated a warmth Nick craved, something he had only imagined the feeling of from the advice Dream and George had told him about.

"You can, your rook can- my knight is being threatened," Nick couldn't finished a sentence.

Karl's mouth made a small 'o' shape as he captured Nicks knight with his rook. "Like that?" He smiled and turned to look at Nick, his smile quickly faded as he matched the intensity of Nicks stare, his heart beat increasing and his cheeks turning red against his will.

Nick's eyes were pulled to look at Karl's pretty pink lips, chapped and just barely apart. He wondered how much more pretty they would look if they were bruised, connected to his with a small string of saliva. He shook his head squeezing his eyes shut.

"Is... is everything ok, Nick?" Karl whispered slightly.

"Yeah, I uhm, I just didn't get a whole lot of sleep last night. Sorry about that, uhm the game!" Nick crawled back to his side of the board and moved a pawn mindlessly.

He tried to just focus on the board, not the boy in front of him. He did a double take and had to rub his eyes when he thought he had seen dark hickies on Karl's neck. He dragged his hand down his face before he fell on his back.

"Would you prefer to just chill and listen to music? I have speakers in here." Karl said as he started to pack the game up.

Nick nodded.

"You can pick the music, my PC should be on." Karl closed the little box and pulled out his phone, furrowing his eyebrows at the notifications.

Nick put on some random rap playlist that had a couple songs he knew he liked before laying back down on the floor.

"Do you wanna lay on the bed? It's more comfortable than the floor boards," Karl asked without taking his eyes off of his phone, aggressively typing.

"No it's fine I like the floor," Nick said, "besides that would be a horrible choice on my half," he whispered. He felt guilty for having such sinful thoughts.
