No one ever talked about the middle class Naija. Of course they were always believed to be fine. They could afford the basic needs of life and a little bit of things they craved for. They had average jobs that could sustain their families. No statistics ever cared about that percentage of the population. Some even believed that there was nothing like middle class, that you were either rich or poor.
I would best describe my family as middle class. We lived in our own duplex in the center of Lagos,we had two cars, and we attend good schools. Oh, I know what you're thinking. Isn't that suppose to be described as rich? No,it isn't. I'm not the one to compare on a very good day but compared to my classmates' parents we were better off average,if not poor. We were just two so Daddy always squeezes out of his meagre salary to send us to the best private schools. He always said often that he strives to send us to the best schools so we can meet with the elites of the society, that way, we'll have connections in future. "Don't be uptight at school, make friends, mix with people. It brings very great opportunities in future", he always said. Then he'll proceed to talk about his childhood friend whose dad was a petty merchant. "Dotun's dad took him to a private university while we all proceeded to struggle in those death holes. Not like his father was financially buoyant but he sold his lands and valuable items to sponsor him. After graduating, Dotun got his first job in his best friend's father's company. He now has his own construction company all over Africa. If only Baami(my father) too had struggled to do something like that",he always said shaking his head. I and Atinuke had the stories he told in our heads. Sometimes we would try mimicking his manly voice while telling the stories word for word.
Life as a middle class was fun. You have richer relatives and you have those you are better than. Just right at the middle of the society's ladder trying to climb higher.
