While I was working hard on reading the content for Lesson 4.4, I suddenly realized I must have dozed off! I jolt awake with my sore face stuck on my keyboard and drool everywhere. As I was wiping away my drool from my computer I realized everything is different. I have been asleep much longer than a few minutes as I originally thought... I have been asleep for a week! I jump out of bed looking out the window at the gray skies that blanket the earth wondering what in the world is going on.
'Biden has been president for a week,' A sudden thought hit me with the might of a thousand trains. 'Nothing wrong with the man but the anarchy that was bound to happen apparently did. I always knew the storming of the capital wasn't going to be the only incident.' It wasn't clouds that were making the skies gray, it was ash. Another Civil War has begun.
Running out of my room, I shout for my family only to hear nothing. Not a sound. I pull out my phone that somehow hasn't died yet and check the news. The top article stated, "Biden VS Trump, Civil War Has Begun!", that was five days ago!
Immediately I call anyone I can. The first few times I tried I got voicemail, but on the fateful fifth ring I got a tired and weary response. "He-hello? Who is this?" tears come to my eyes as I reply that it is me, "Kaylee?! Where are you? Are you ok?! I haven't heard from you in a week, no one has! We all assumed you perished in the first strike!".
"The first strike? Dad, what do you mean? I am at home, I just woke up! I've been asleep this whole time! What did the news mean? Civil War?!" I'm frantic, I realize that but what would you do if you wake up a mere week in the future to all out Civil War? Yeah, I thought so. A sudden voice brought me out of my inner monologuing.
"Tensions rose after Biden took the office a little over a week ago. Trump and his supporters were not happy. They broke into a storehouse and stole guns and ammunition as well as bombs and planes, whatever they could get. They stormed the whitehouse for the second time and managed to kill enough political leaders that were there that day to cause this Civil War. Biden was led to safety, his whereabouts are currently unknown... Do you think you can make it to the airport?"
All of the information made my head spin. All of that happened in a week? "The airport? The one where you work? I should be able to but I don't see any cars in the driveway," I say as I look out my window, "I might need to steal one. Are the pets with you? I don't hear anything, the house is completely silent."
I sat there with dread building in my stomach, what was taking him so long to answer?! Finally, after what felt like an eternity, he responded. "Kaylee... There's something I need to tell you. You... You won't like it." I knew it... No! No it can't be! They can't be! I won't accept it! "Kaylee? Kaylee honey, are you ok? I know it's a shock bu-" the line went dead.
"My phone died..." I stared in shock. My family is an hour away, we're in a civil war, my pets are- "No! No! No! Maximus! Dahlia! Ginger, Shadow, Mischief, Gracie! I won't believe it! I refuse! I refuse!" Through my blurred vision I saw pictures on my wall of my family in happier times with our pets, eyes radiating happiness and love. All of which are nonexistent now.
I must get to my family! I have to! I put on my shoes that were throw haphazardly across the room and picked my phone up off the floor, I grab my backpack and stuff it with everything I might need. With my backpack full of clothes, food, pictures, and my phone charger I set out.
When I open the door to my house, my nose gets assaulted with the smell of smoke, ash, and death. I look around and I see no cars in the driveways. That can't do. I go to my garage and grab anything that might be able to break a lock, time to break into garages.
With might that I didn't know I had, I broke the lock to my neighbors door and successfully entered. I remember them having a spare car in their garage so I didn't do it without reason. I hop into the car after opening the garage door and I start the engine. It turns over a few times but it isn't working.
"Come on! Start! Please!" Frustrated, I hit the dash and the car roared to life. "Yes! How's that for a seventeen year old?! Suck it Matt, I'm better than you!" I backed up and started driving.
For miles and miles, there was nothing but ashened skies and devastation. Cars were overturned and fires burned, turning the surrounding area a creepy orange color. The airport. I must get to the airport.
I drove in a haze, not thinking, not feeling, not anything. I felt numb, how could this happen? Sick of the silence that was invading my mind, I turned on the radio. Who said the end of the world can't be fun?
Expecting music, I turned it up as loud as I thought I could handle and turned it on. "BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP!" Huh?! An alarm...?! Wait, that sounds like my alarm!
I jolted awake for real this time, happy that everything was just a horrible nightmare. "Oh god, that was terrifying! I've done things I never would have thought possible for one my age and for something as simple as family" Relief flooded my system, making even the insistent beeping of my alarm dull. "... I need to pee."
