Escaping Madness Part 1
The marks on my wrists were beat red, with a deep indent from where the cuffs had crushed my circulation. As I stepped into the caged windowed building I was automatically stripped of everything containing value in my life. Literally and physically; physically meaning I was completely naked with a hundred eyes glaring at me. Staring back at the door that would shut out my last look of freedom I had the wind knocked out of me when a big bundle of orange hit my stomach.
“Put it on!” yelled the guard who had hurled the bundle of cloth at me. “This will be the only thing you can call yours for the rest of your time in here”.
As I heard those words come out of her mouth like the sound of nails on a chalk board, I couldn’t help but notice her awful thick brown mustache and unibrow. If I had more than one call it would be to the cosmetologist on 5th and Washington Avenue where I would go every three weeks to get my nails and eyebrows done. I know Cynthia would have something to cure that mess. The clothes were rough against my skin, but I had no time to worry about that. The line I was in started moving.
“Lets go Tully, move it along! I ain’t getting any younger here waiting for you.” Said the same annoying wo(man).
“Yeah, move it chicken legs!” yelled the girl behind me.
This is going to be a fun time I thought as I walked dreadfully toward the hall full of cells. Walking down the hallway was quite scary. The girls were all staring at me like I was a new target to attack. I tried not to make eye contact with anyone. We turned the corner and there before us was a maze of cell walls.
The annoying guard called my name again, “Tully!! Get up here! Meet your cell mate Piper!!”
Moving towards the front of the line, I could see bits and pieces of who this Piper was behind the heads of the other delinquents. She was tall, thin, and had bleach-blonde hair. Her eyes were popping out of her head leaving big black holes underneath them. She looked like she didn’t sleep in years. Finally I stood right in front of her.
She said, “I’m Piper, welcome to paradise”.
Knowing she was either sick in the head or just plain sarcastic, I followed behind her and didn’t say a word. I immediately went to my side of the cell and began to make my bed. The sheets were just as rough as the clothes I was wearing and we were given only one pillow. Tonight’s sleep was not something to look forward to at all.
Piper sat watching me make my bed when finally she asked “so what are you in here for?”
Not knowing whether to trust her completely I casually said “I was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time”.
“No shit I’m not that dumb, but no really what did you do?” Piper asked again.
“I heard she killed someone” said the girl with dark hair and glasses.
“Shut up Alex, do you seriously believe the shit you hear around here?” said Piper.
“It wouldn’t surprise me, this place is full of psychotic criminals” stated Alex.
“Yeah, we speak from experience” said Piper.
Alex walked over and sat on Piper’s bed. She looked mysterious but somewhat friendly. Her attitude was cold and careless. Maybe these girls could turn out to be nice after all, but then again who am I kidding, this is jail. No one gives a shit about anyone in here.
“Well I didn’t kill anyone, but I might as well have since I’m going to be stuck in here forever anyways.” I said.
“So then what did you do?” asked Alex.
I thought back to the night when everything went wrong. We had it all planned out; everything was supposed to go right. I should have known it would be too good to be true. Don’t ever trust a man.
“I tried to rob a bank with my boyfriend. He got away. I didn’t, end of story.” I said hastily.
“Oh shit! That’s bad ass! Too bad it didn’t work and you couldn’t keep all of that money” Said Alex with excitement.
“Yeah too bad my boyfriend was a fucking asshole and couldn’t keep his word. He promised we would make it out okay, and when we got caught he got away and never tried to help me. I had most of the money in my bag. He got his share and took off” I explained.
“Never trust a man” Piper said as she dazed off. “They’re all cheaters and liars; no one is really down for you”.
“Well that’s why you have me, I always keep my word” said Alex and Piper smiled and gave her a kiss.
“Yeah well I’m going to break out of here, and when I do it’ll be ugly for him” I declared.
“Good luck with that. No one has ever gotten out of here alive” said Piper.
“That might not be a bad idea Piper, if you think about it we know everything in this place, I mean we’ve been here for how long?!” said Alex.
“Woah, who invited you two to join my plan? I can’t take any chances of this getting messed up” I said with a harsh tone.
“How else are you gonna learn all the nooks and crannies in this place?” said Piper.
“You’re just fresh meat. I got the perfect person to introduce you to if you want to fight against us, she will sure put you in your place” Alex said while standing up.
“You think I’m scared of you?” I asked amazed that they actually would think I took that as a threat.
“Let us in the plan or else” said Alex pulling something very sharp from behind her.
Before I could answer I was interrupted by the guard announcing dinner. Alex fumbled with the sharp tool and put it back in her pocket. As she walked out she glared at me “This conversation is not over newbie” she said with the coldest tone I have ever heard.
