Now, we can't just throw Thomas here into battle. That would be irresponsible! He probably has no idea what he's doing. No, he needs to be trained properly. "Okay kid, you know how to load your rifle?" The fort nodded his head, "I pretty sure everyone can load a rifle" "Okay, can you hit that bird?" I decide it would do good as practice for him. Thomas barely misses the bird and mumbled some type of curse. "You shouldn't be saying that stuff." I know he's upset he lost a shot or two but he can't be swearing up and down the battlefield. I gave him a moment to breathe. "Look, you think you can shoot at least one person in an army?" Thomas shook his head up and down. "Good, because there's going to be a lot of them."
Eventually, I had to show him to the spot he would be guarding. It was slightly wooded, making hiding much easier. Cincinnati waved from across the river. "Watch them carefully, that's who you guard," I explain. Thomas groans at me, complaining that his job is to basically nanny a city older than he is. It's a boring job but it can be rewarding when we aren't having to rebuild the state from the ground up cause Ohio is busy with Cincinnati.
