PROLOGUE
A black cat sat on what seemed to be a nearly empty moorland. Ash seemed to fall all around as her gaze turned to look out.
In front of her, a large orange and white tom was pacing. He had a gaze of sadness gleaming in his eyes.
"Where is Skystar? He called us here did he not?" A wiry brown she-cat impatiently snapped.
"I'm sure it wasn't for the view, Windstar." A handsome silver long furred tom murmured, "this is the part of Starclan that we don't talk about."
"But it needs to be addressed," the raspy yet firm voice of a tom echoed over all of them.
Windstar sighed, "it's about time Skystar, why did you bring us here?"
"Because this needs to be addressed. Cats fade as their memories vanish, and their stories aren't passed down. This is where they wind up! The Clans are starting to lose what makes them truly unique and because of this our stories are becoming more like memories!" Skystar hissed, digging his claws into the ashen ground.
Riverstar, the gray tom, looked thoughtful. While Thunderstar, the orange tom, spoke rather bluntly, "This is about Star Flower, isn't it? We all fade with time, it is the natural order of the world."
"But it doesn't have to be!" Skystar shook his head, "The Dark Forest found a way to bring cats back! I've seen Tigerstar, stalking amongst the trees!"
"I think the bee's in your brain have gotten out of control!" Shadowstar snorted.
Riverstar tilted his head in consideration, "if it were true, why have we not seen him ourselves? It is true we can't cross over that border, and if we do the barrier between us will fall. Did you stare into the forest Skystar?"
Skystar lashed his tail, "Don't you care at all, Thunder? About Gray Wing? About him fading away to nothing?"
Thunderstar hissed loudly at Skystar, "Address me by my leader name, Thunderstar. And you don't think I care about Gray Wing? He raised me better than you ever could, because you were too selfish to see past your own ambitions. I have enough sense in my head to know when something is impossible. That's why I have already made peace with what is going to happen, I think you need to make peace as well."
With that, Thunderstar whipped around and headed back into the ash. His form slowly vanished on the seemingly endless gray plain that stretched behind them. Shadowstar dipped her head in respect, "I'm sorry about Star Flower. I understand this is very hard for you to accept, but it's what is going to happen. It is something we all have to accept. One day we will fade and our energy will return to where it was once before."
With that, Shadowstar followed after Thunderstar. Windstar just hissed out, "Hare-brain!" Before being swallowed by the ash as well.
Riverstar shook his head, "I'm sorry Skystar. The natural order of things is harsh. We need to make the most of what little time we have left. Since the Clans are losing themselves, time will eventually swallow the remains."
He gently pressed his muzzle to Riverstar, "you are a great leader, and I hope Skyclan will honor you for many moons to come."
Skystar just let Riverstar follow the others into the ash. Grief made a cry rise up from his throat, before it vanished into the nothingness around him.
He gazed out over the land, remembering Star Flower, but since no living cat remembered her…. She was gone. He would never see her green eyes reflecting the Blazing Star again.
After a moment of consideration, an idea suddenly started to form in his mind.
Yes, the Blazing Star.
If they needed it, and Star Flower was one of the only cats who could tell them where to find it….
With that, Skystar rushed back towards Starclan territory. He easily felt his paws flow over the land he had ended up in. Trees towered above while prey sang high in the branches.
'There is only one place I can go to get what I need….' Skystar kept running on.
The land eventually started to get darker. The scent of rot hung heavy in the air. Skystar halted in front of a force he could not describe. Taking a gulp, he forced his way through, being sure there were no prying eyes on the other side.
After what seemed like moons, he smelled it. It was sickening, and smelled of rot. He could hear the heaving and coughing as he picked the animal up and dashed back towards Starclan territory.
Now he just needed to drop it in the pool there….
And he would be able to see Star Flower once more.
With lightning fast reflexes he dashed back through the barrier. As far as he could tell, no prying eyes or stalking Dark Forest cats had slipped through. That was a major relief. Even better no Starclan cat questioned him as he made his way back to the pool.
Setting the carcass of the questionable animal down, Skystar gazed into the waters of the crystal clear pool. He shut his eyes and willed something to shimmer into view. After a moment the beautiful lake of the Clans showed in the water. Skystar looked down in approval and picked the carcass back up. He let it go, watching it sink into the pool.
After a moment, the lake suddenly started turning a deep red. Skystar flattened his ears in confusion. Why was the whole lake red? He only had intended for a.leader to get sick or a deputy….
But to his horror he watched as the lake turned the color of blood. He slowly backed away from the pool.
Then, without another word and slightly panicked, he vanished back into the bushes of Starclan, leaving the red stain of disease lingering over the Clans he was meant to protect.
