Greenie

"Hey, wake up," The sound of a British accent echoed in your ears. Your eyes fluttered open to see a pretty blonde boy in a scruffy beige shirt. The sun glared down directly behind him, fading his outline. You were in an underground cage along with some boxes.

"Hey," the boy said again. He looked genuinely worried, and confused.

You realized you were gaping at him, and shut your mouth, then looked around your surroundings. You couldn't see much, considering how deep the cage was, so you scrambled to your feet.

"Wait here," the British boy jumped onto a box, and climbed out of the cage.

"Don't leave me!" You shouted, reaching the rim of the cage. You jumped and grabbed on, but your lack of upper body strength fought against you, and you fell onto your butt.

There was some faint talking before another boy with short brown hair and very curved, s-shaped eyebrows jumped into the box with you. He threw you over his shoulder before climbing on top of a box and sitting you on the edge of the cage so he could climb out. You pushed yourself away from the edge, and stood up. There were multiple wooden self-made buildings, a little forest, and probably 3 dozen people milling about. But most importantly, there were 4 large stone walls, moss and vines draped over and covering a lot of it, enclosing all the buildings and people. In the center of each wall was an open part, where, from the looks of it, one could just leave.

"You alright, Greenie?" The taller brunette boy asked.

Your eyebrows burrowed together. What does Greenie mean? Ignoring your own question, you nodded, to keep things simple.

The British boy chuckled. "It's just terminology. I'm Newt, this is Gally. I know, you probably don't remember your name, or anything else, but don't worry, it's normal. I'll show you around later on tonight. Until then, you can stick with Chuck. Follow me."

You followed Newt into a smaller forest with lots of hammocks. On one of them sat a short, stocky boy with curly brown hair and big brown eyes. He stood up and looked at you with a sweet smile. You'd guess he was about 3 years younger than you.

"This is Chuck," Newt said. You gave them both a weak smile. "He'll be showing you around, I've got some other bloody shucks I need to deal with."

Newt waved and walked away.

"Yeah, we've got a whole, fancy system, as you can see with our twig-built roofs and whatnot. This is where we all sleep," Chuck moved aside so you could examine the wall-less space with dozens of hammocks. "I think you'll be set up somewhere else, you know, since you're a girl, but obviously you're the only girl so I don't know exactly how that's gonna work..."

You winced at the thought of having to try to sleep surrounded by all these smelly, snoring boys. Worst comes to worst, you'll just need to make up some reason you can't sleep there. "I'm sure it'll get figured out."

Chuck smiled sweetly at your understanding. "Next, I better show you the bathrooms and showers."

"Yeah, that'd be good knowledge to have," you nodded in agreement.

He lead you to a nearby area with multiple shower rooms. Each had it's own toilet, sink, towel rack and shower. Convenient. It made you feel much better that it wasnt just one room with a bunch of showers.

"They aren't the best or the cleanest, but they work well." Chuck said. "Also, incase you were wondering at all, you probably won't get in with a job for a few more days."

"Job?" You questioned.

He chuckled. "Yeah, everyone has to play a part in making everything here work out. It doesn't do that by itself."

You wondered what types of jobs there were, and if you would get to choose. Washing dishes sounded disgusting, and anything with plants sounded bad as well.

"Don't worry, either Alby or Newt will most likely talk to you about it a little later." It was almost like Chuck was reading your mind. "Oh, hey, it looks like Gally and the builders are building you your own room."

Off in the distance, there was a group of boys, and it did look like they were building something. That's really nice, having your own private room.

Chuck started heading in that direction, and you followed. As you were on your way over there, a gorgeous brunette boy with sparkly brown eyes stopped the two of you. He pulled Chuck aside and whispered something in his ear, causing Chuck to glance over at you, then back to the guy. Chuck whispered something back, but you couldn't make out anything they were saying.

The brunette held up a hand to signify a wave before jogging off, and you couldn't help but stare for a second.

"That was Thomas," Chuck explained. He's our newest runner, and he only got here a few days ago."

Thomas.

The name rang in your ears.

"C'mon, let's head back. It's almost time for the party."

~~~
The party started when the sun fully set. They had a huge fire, along with some sort of games, and a table of food and snacks.
By now, Chuck had unintentionally left you alone. You just stood in one spot, trying to convince yourself you were looking around for Newt when you were really trying to see if Thomas was there. What Chuck said about him being a 'runner' didn't make a whole lot of sense to you. Unless that was some kid of job. But why would he need to just run?
Eventually, Newt approached you. "How was the tour?"
"To be honest, pretty cool. It obviously takes a lot of strength and creativity to build a place like this." You looked back at the Glade in admiration.
"Yeah, it wasn't the easiest. But now that the place is sturdy, there's time to screw around as well."
You chuckled. "That's reassuring."
"Yeah," he smiled. "Did Chuck mention anything about a job to you?"
"Yeah, he actually did."
"Okay, you'll have a few days to figure out what you want to do, and I'll help you around until you figure it out," he started walking around. "You met Gally in the box, he's the head builder. There's Winston and the slicers, Jeff and Clint are the med jacks, Fry is our only chef. I'm head of the track-hoes, and then there's the sloppers and bricknicks as well. And of course, the runners, but that's kind of out of th-" Newt kept talking but your mind focused on the word runner.
"What does a runner do?" You interrupted.
"They're the ones who go out and map the maze, but we don't really start you as a runner; it's really dangerous."
But didnt Thomas just get here a few days ago?
"I can run really fast." You attempted to work your way into the exception.
"Well, I'll slide you a deal. Try out some of the other jobs tomorrow, and I'll talk to Minho and Thomas about making you a runner."
"Deal." You agreed. "C-can I meet them?"
"Sure, they're right over here." You followed Newt and quickly noticed Thomas sitting on a log, talking to another guy with slick hair.
Your heart began beating uncontrollably and you couldn't figure out why.
