His voice is so different from any other time I've heard it. There's no power, no anger, no fear, no confusion. It's just him. Somehow, I know that it's his normal voice when he doesn't have to put up a front. That's how he feels talking to me.

"Hi," I respond quietly, suddenly not sure what I had expected in coming here.

I sit down in front of the bars and cross my legs, leaning back against the wall behind me. Kai doesn't take his eyes off of me. It feels like he's studying my each and every movement.

"I was hoping you would come," he tells me. His words surprise me, and by the small smile that appears on his face, it shows.

"Why?"

"Because I wanted to see you."

"Why?" I know the answer, but I still ask the question.

"You know why."

I sigh in response. I wish these weren't the current circumstances.

I stare at him through the bars, taking in every feature of his face that I can. The dark hair, the thick eyebrows that should be intimidating but aren't, the navy blue eyes that remind me of the middle of the ocean where it goes on for thousands and thousands of feet. He has a strong jaw line, and I find myself wishing I could trace it with my finger. I know that Kai is taking in my own face in the same way.

A few minutes later, he breaks the silence by asking, "What's your name?"

"Amara." I don't tell him that I go by Mara because he doesn't get to call me that.

"Amara."

The sound of my name coming out of his lips is enough to cause a shiver to run up my spine. I hate that I love the way it sounds. Damn you, moon goddess.

"Why were you trying to take down all the packs?" I ask, changing the conversation to hopefully make myself forget how he's making me feel.

Kai groans, "Not you, too," but his tone is teasing. I don't say anything as I wait for him to respond, because I don't think this is funny.

He tried to destroy our pack and he did destroy other packs, and he thinks it's okay to joke about it like this?

"I'm serious."

At the cold tone in my voice, Kai sobers up and stops smiling. He looks into my eyes for a few seconds, and I feel myself slowly, piece by piece, starting to crumble under his gaze. I don't want to lose the hard front I'm putting up right now, but his eyes are so enticing and gorgeous. The navy blue is so dark yet so rich, and I want to be able to see them up close.

No Mara. Bad Mara.

"The hybrids and I," Kai starts, looking away from my gaze. I hope it was because the intense stare was too much for him to handle. "We were never accepted. People were always scared of us. Some of us have been around for hundreds and hundreds of years, and the world has never changed. Believe me, we've tried."

At the mention of hundreds and hundreds of years, I begin to wonder how old Kai is. The us and we makes me think that he's been around for a lot longer than I have.

"We were always shunned and thought the worst of. People acted as though we were blood thirsty creatures simply because we were half one and half the other. One day, we decided enough was enough. We wanted to create a world where hybrids could walk normally among other supernaturals without them cowering away from us."

"Killing off the problem is not a way of solving it," I say coldly.

His next words surprise me even more than his earlier words did.
