CHAPTER 13

My face softened and then a tear escaped my eyes. Hinagod naman ni Eunice ang likod ko.

"He's okay now. Don't worry, Syden."

"B-But, he has fever, right?" nilingon ko si Eunice. She nodded.

"Yes." nilingon niya ang gawi ng anak ko. "Doctor Kramer just said it's normal for a baby to have fever kapag may tumubong ipin."

My eyes widened. "R-Really?"

Ngumiti si Eunice at hinarap ako.  Ngumuso siya. "Oo. Alam mo bang sobrang takot ko kanina baka mapatay mo ako. Hays! What a relief, big boy na talaga si Asher."

Napangiti ako at saka lumapit sa kama na tinutulugan ng anak ko. He's now peacefully sleeping, dry tears were evident on his eyes. I guess he cried a lot.

Naawa tuloy ako. I gently caressed my son's face. Looking at his innocent face, the opposite expression of the face reminded me of earlier. I sighed heavily. Damn!

Ikinakahiya ko na ang sarili ko ngayon, ngayon ko lang naramdaman ang ganitong pagkapahiya sa sarili. I'm so embarrassed to the core. I closed my eyes firmly.

I opened my eyes when the door clicked. Napalingon ako sa gawi ng pinto at nakita ang isang nakaputing hospital uniform na ginang. Ngumiti siya nang makita ako.

Tumayo si Eunice at binati ang Doctora. Tumayo rin ako at bumati. "Good day, Doc."

"So, you're Mrs. Gray?" she asked while looking directly at me. Natigilan ako.

"'Miss' pa po 'yan, Doc." si Eunice ang sumagot. "Walang asawa at walang plano. Disgrasyada kaya nagkaanak." biro pa niya.

Napalingon ako kay Eunice. Ramdam ko ang pamumula ng mukha sa hiya at inis sa kaibigan. Natawa lang ang Doctora, tila sinasabayan ang biro ni Eunice. I flushed.

"I see. Bueno, hindi na ako magtatagal kasi may pasyente pang naghihintay sa akin sa baba." hinarap ako ni Doctora. "Here's the list sa kakailanganing inumin ng baby, since it's not his first time having teeth, then it will be alright."

"Pero Doc., hindi naman po siya nagkaganyan noong unang beses na may tumubo. What happened?"

"It's normal. No need to worry, Miss Gray. Sadyang iba-iba talaga ang pangyayari kung tutubuan na ng ipin ang baby, minsan pa nga isang taon. Depende po 'yon. Just follow the list, 3 to 4 days, okay na."

"Hindi po ba natin siya ia-admit, Doc?"

"The hell, Syden?" Eunice interfered. "Normal nga sabi, ang praning mo!"

I glared at her.

"No, Miss Gray. Pero kung gusto mo, dito na muna kayo 'till the baby's fine, 3 to 4 days. But we would add charges."

I nodded. "Yes, Doc. It's okay, as long as my baby will be fine."

"Okay, then. I'll go now. Here's the list."

She handed me a piece of paper before leaving.

Binasa ko ang nasa papel. Mga vitamins at gamot ito para sa anak ko. After reading the list, I put it on the surface table beside the hospital bed.

I faced my son and caressed its forehead. He's still hot. Hindi ko tuloy mapigilan ang maawa sa kanya.

Baka masakit pa ang parteng tinubuan ng ipin. He's too young to endure the pain, if only I could remove it, I would.

"Grabe, Syden. Tatlong araw ka talagang magbabantay dito? I told you, it's normal!" Eunice ranted.

"Tss. Lower down your voice." asik ko, hinarap ko siya. "Mas mabuti nang sigurado. I don't think I can handle him without the expert's advice. Lalo pa, he's my only son."

"Ede dagdagan mo!"

I glared at her. Nag-peace sign siya bago ngumisi. I looked at my son's direction. I sighed heavily.

Days passed. It's been two days since we've gotten here in the hospital. Humuhupa na rin ang lagnat ng baby ko, nakakangiti na nga, e. And his cute little teeth, nakikita na, nasa ibabang parte.

"Syden, you know what? Parang narinig ko na ang first word ni Asher,"

Nanlaki ang mga mata ko at napalingon kay Eunice. Nakatingin naman ito nang seryoso sa anak ko na naglalaro na ulit ngayon.

"What?!" I had sworn to God that hopefully, I was the one who could hear my baby's first word. But... hinarap ko si Eunice.

"Yes. Last day or last last day, I guess."

"No way! Eunice naman, alam mo naman na gusto ko ako ang unang..." I shook my head. "Ano ang first word niya?" Somehow, I feel excited.

"Well, as far as I remember. It starts with the letter 'M'."

Nanlaki ang mga mata ko. M. Niyugyog ko sa balikat si Eunice sa sobrang excitement "Tell me, it's 'Mommy', right? Tell me, Eunice!"

"Aray naman!" asik niya. Binitawan ko siya. "Well, hindi."

"Ano?" agad akong nadismaya. Damn! Dapat ako lagi ang kasama ng anak ko, e!

"Yes. Basta naalala ko—"

"Ano?!"

"M... M... 'Maganda ka, Tita Eunice'." then she burst out laughing.

I flushed in much irritants! Damn! Agad ko siyang sinabunutan, tawa lang naman siya nang tawa. Sobrang naiinis ako. I believed her. Tss. Stupida.

Apat na oras ang lumipas nang mapagpasyahan kong lumabas muna ng kwarto namin upang bumili ng energy drink. Si Eunice ang pinabantay ko kay Asher.

I was walking on the hospital hallway when I saw someone familiar meters far from me. I swallowed hard.

"Damn..." I cursed inwardly. I roam the place, walang katao-tao sa hallway, ako lang. May nakikita akong tao pero malayo layo sila.

Nang makatiyempo, agad akong nagtago sa may halamanan sa gilid ng gawi patungo sa hagdan. Nanliit ang aking mga mata nang biglang lumabas ang isang nakaunipormeng lalaki. He's wearing a Doctor suit!

He's looking around and I know it's me he's been looking for since earlier. I swallowed hard as I clenched my fists. He's damn following me 'till now!

Nang makalapit siya sa gawi ko, agad akong nagpakita. He didn't notice it so I grabbed the opportunity to get and pin him to the wall.

"You really think I won't notice you, huh? Dumb-asshole!" I said fiercely. Diniinan ko ang paghawak sa kanya.

Nang umangat ang kanyang mukha. Natigilan ako at halos malaglag ang panga. My eyes widened and literally didn't know what to say.

My lips parted as our eyes met. Napabitaw ako sa sobrang gulat.
