I'm pretty sure this is the first time
he's ever looked at me.

Nervously, I stuck my shaky hand out his way.

He shook it with no problem.

He flashed me a smile.

After that, we walked to the rooms where we say our goodbyes.

I sat down, wiping my sweaty hands on my dress.

My mom, dad, and sister walked in.

"Evelyn!" Sarah shrieked.

"Use your speed, you're fast! Get a bow and arrow, because your aim is great! Water, water, water! It's your best friend!" my father demanded.

I nodded.

Speed and my aim were my advantages.

"Evelyn, you can do this. You must try. You can come home. " my mom said.

"I love you." Sarah said, giving me a bone crushing hug.

"Time's up," a peacekeeper said.

My family left.

Mary walked in.

"Mary!"

"Hi Evelyn. I'm so sorry about what happened. You will make it home, okay? You're amazing and you can do this. When you're in the arena, wear this to remind you of your district. Fight for us. Come home." she said, handing me a bracelet with grain on it.

Disrict 9's symbol.

I hugged her.

"Thank you, Mary." I said.

"Time!"

"Don't rush me," Mary said.

"Evelyn?"

"Yes?"

"When you're in the arena, remember this: by the river, under the rock."

"What do you mean?"

"Come on!" the peacekeeper yelled.

"Bye Evelyn."

She walked out, infuriating me. I was curious. I needed to know what she meant.

By the river, under the rock.

That sentence traveled through my head again and again.

I decided to worry about it when the games started. Surely, I wouldn't find clues then.

"Come on!" Amira said excitedly.

Rayna and Evan were standing next to her.

I stood up and she walked us to the train that would be taking us to the Capitol.

We sat down in the main room.

"What are your strengths and weaknesses?" Rayna asked.

"I run quite fast and I do pretty good with bows and arrows. I'm pretty clumsy, which might be a problem." I answered.

She looked to Evan.

"Knives, spears, and I'm really educated on plants. I'm very bad at hunting, though." he said.

"I can work with that," Rayna said.

Rayna had this serious and tough personality. She always frowned.

I guess the Hunger Games does that to you.

She got up and walked out of the room.

"Agh! No elbows on the table!" Amira scolded me.

"Sorry." I said under my breath.

"It's okay, most of you don't have the best table manners. We'll have to work on that, won't we?" Amira said.

She got up and walked out, too.

"So, you're Evelyn?" Evan asked.

"Yeah, I'm in your class"

"I know," he said, smiling.

He knows? He knows I exist? Woah, wait?

"Did I creep you out? I'm sorry." he apologized.

Did the shock show up on my face?

"No, you're okay." I assured him.

He smiled a little.

How could I kill a person like him?

Ugh.
