Chapter 30

Finally that afternoon there's a knock at the door. Lena pushes past the cynical thought that it might be bad news and lets her excitement of seeing Kara again win out as she springs up to answer the door. Her heart skips a beat as she's met with perfect blonde curls and beautiful blue eyes. She lets out a sigh of relief as she sees that Kara is all in one piece. She crushes her girlfriend in a hug and feels Kenna's tiny presence join in as well. "I'm so sorry I was longer than expected."
"I missed you mommy."
"I missed you too Ken." Lena can see the tears that well in Kara's eyes at this as they break apart, "I promise I'm not going anywhere again for a while." Kara says as she picks up her daughter and holds her tight. "Hey how was staying at Lena's?" Kara changes the subject before she really starts crying.
"So fun! We read animal books, and I had pancakes, and we went shopping!"
"Wow that does sound like fun."
"Yeah you should have a sleepover here too! Right Lee?!"
"I think that's an excellent idea." Lena leans in and gives them each a kiss on the cheek as she closes the door behind them.
"Well how 'bout we stay over tonight?" Kara suggests as she meets Lena's gaze and they both stare longingly.
"Mommy guess what? We get to have a fancy tea party with fancy clothes because I got a new princess dress and Lee got a super duper fancy dress too! And you get to come but only if you dress up fancy too!"
"Whoa! That sounds so fun! But ugh now I have to go shopping," she sighs dramatically and does a fake pout.

Later that night with Kenna tucked safely into bed, Lena and Kara are able to catch up on what really happened. Kara had a solar flare while fighting off a threat before it was contained. With everyone scrambling to catch them without her, and to get her recharged and rested up there wasn't much time for updates. And Kara insisted they not worry Lena until they had to.
"I can't keep doing this. I love that you're here for me, but I can't keep doing this to Kenna. I need to be around more or have a safer job."
"So what are you saying? You don't want to be supergirl anymore?"
"I don't know. All I know is part of me is terrified every time I go out there. Of course I love it and I want the city to be safe, but I also just want to have a normal life."
"That's understandable. I don't know how you do it." She says as she squeezes her girlfriend tighter, "but I'll always be here for you, no matter what you decide." Kara just nods, tears threatening to spill once again this evening.
"You've got a pretty great kid, you know that? You're doing a good job, just like any working parent. You're always gonna want more time no matter what you do. So just make sure you're doing something that makes you happy." Kara nods and Lena plants a kiss on her forehead, "Now, come to bed."
"I don't have any jammies," Kara says slowly unbuttoning her shirt and looking at Lena with a glimmer of mischief in her eyes. Lena gives her a suggestive look of her own in return before getting up from the couch and giving her a chaste kiss on the cheek "That's okay, you can wear something of mine." She giggles at Kara's look of defeat, "we'll have plenty of time for that when you're not just back from imminent danger." Kara doesn't say so, but she's not so sure she has that luxury anymore. They go to bed together and Lena doesn't let go of Kara all night. Kara's heart aches with all the worry she must've caused her wonderful girlfriend this weekend.
