My Favorite Walks
A Collection of Poems by Evelyn Laferriere

Vanderbilt Mansion
Where man-made beauties touch nature,
And river glitters against land,
Animals roam in their pasture,
I reach out and touch it with my hand.
I touch the trees that I walk past,
And the leaves on the trodden path,
The flowers that hide, downcast--
Weeds in the sunlight take a bath.
I touch the nature that surrounds me,
And the family that walks by my side,
And now I know, I can truly see,
As the river flows two ways with the tide,
I love this walk because of the
Family that walks beside of me,
And the nature that my eyes can see
And how they come together, happily.
My Backyard
A round and a round in a circle I go,
I climb up the hill and then back down low.
The gardens bloom before my eyes,
The blue bird looks over, back, cries.
And just like nature, I will grow.
My Neighborhood
To walk my neighborhood,
You must turn right out of my driveway.
Then march up the hill like the train that could.
Walk past a neighbor and you will say,
Good morning, good evening, good afternoon,
Or whatever you say at that time of day.
We will get there, to the cul de sac soon,
Where children ride their bikes
Under the sun or the moon.
The little kids go by on their trikes,
And I smile, reminiscing the time
When the march up our street was my favorite of hikes.
But now that walk is just a dime,
Compared to the 100 dollar bill that I find
When I walk through the woods, out in the world, sublime.
Vassar College
Grandpa needed a flat place to walk,
So we got in our car and drove to Vassar.
The campus is smooth, flowing, elegant
And he was happy, surrounded with history.
History is his favorite subject.
He tells stories of old at every visit.
He somehow knows a story about
Every year in our past.
