Showers

I think the real reason we take long showers
Is because we forget the world exists.
For a moment it slips down our backs
With the water

For a moment it slips down the drain
With our shampoo.

I think the real reason we take long showers
Is because they feel good.
Not just on our skin, or because of
the warmth.

We are cleansed. We know that once we
Step out, we can start a new.

I think the real reason we take long showers
Is because sometimes we aren't ready
To start a new.

Sometimes we aren't ready to stop being dirty,
Even as we watch the dirt disappear down the drain.

Is the dirt not what makes us who we are?
And yet, we feel most at peace
When we are clean, after a long shower.
