Trick Me or Trick Me Not

Maybe I had been wrong about Keith. He has been so kind to me. He didn’t even judge me when I had my break down in the middle of the street. I was beginning to feel bad from how I talked to him. We had been in his truck for maybe ten minutes, making our way through the New York traffic. It felt like we had been caught by every red light and I can tell that it is beginning to frustrate him, because every time we come to a stop he lets out a grunt. “Someone is a little impatient.” I couldn’t help but to giggle at his distraught features.

“I am just use to zipping in and out of traffic with my cruiser. I can’t do it in my truck.”

“Oh…so you are one of those kind of cops.” It doesn’t surprise me one bit.

“What do you mean?” He looked over at me before turning his attention back to the vehicles in front of him.

“You abuse your power.”

“Oh yeah…I’m dirty cop…” He wiggled is eyebrows, insinuating a double meaning to what he had just said.

“Oh hush. Don’t be such a pervert.” A man will be a man, no matter what you do or say.

“You know you like it.” He might be right, but I’m not going to let him know that. All my life I had been either stuck in my room or at work. My parents didn’t even let me go to public school, so they home schooled me. Yet my brother and sister were able to experience the public school life. They went to football games and proms, while I stayed at home and studied to make sure that I would make an excellent grade on the tests that were sure to come. So I didn’t get to experience the interactions between the opposite sex. I never got to flirt or go out on a date. I never felt the gentle touch of a loving man. Not even the men that I worked with at my daily job wouldn’t even pay me any attention. Hell, I never got to experience love at all. So, it feels nice to even have someone’s attention. “We’re here.”

He paralleled parked next to what seemed to be a club. People were lined up next to the building, patiently waiting for their turn to go in. Everyone is in what is known as club attire.

“I’m sorry Keith, but this isn’t my kind of scene. I’d rather not go in there.” Clubs are so typical. People grinding on each other with their sweaty bodies. Loud music pumping through the air. Just thinking about it makes me feel sick. That is too much interaction for me.

“That isn’t where we are going.” He pointed to the joint across the street. A large neon sign above the entrance flashed PJ’s Pub. I feel so stupid.

“I’m sorry. I don’t know what is wrong with me lately.”

“It’s okay. You are just being a woman.” Excuse me? The hell did he just say? “Hold up there. I can already see you getting that dangerous look in your eyes. I’m just playing with you, Sarah.” We sat there in silence for a few seconds. I’m not sure what I can say without it sounding like I am Satan’s mistress. Before anything could really slip out, he got out of the truck and made his way around to me to open my door. Reluctantly, I slid out of the truck and followed alongside of him across the street and into the dimly lit pub. The smell of smoke and alcohol wafted my senses when we walked through the double doors.

Of course PJ’s was like your typical bar scene. A few men sitting alone at the bar drinking their sorrows away. A group of loud friends surrounding the only pool table that is situated in the far corner. A lone dart board next to it, not being used at all. But, what was different about this bar, was that there are decorations that refer to police officers and firemen. This must be where those hard working men and women come to relax and forget about the stressful day they had.

He led me over to the group of men surrounding the pool table. I couldn’t help but to smile at the laughter and joyous looks on their faces. “Hey guys!” Keith yelled out to get their attention. All of the men turned to look at us standing there. “This is Sarah. The one I was telling y’all about.” He had a huge grin on his face. What a goof.

“I can’t believe you came with this loser.” The man closest to me that was leaning on against the pool table spoke up. He stepped toward me and wrapped his arm around my shoulder and walked me over to a booth that was nearest to us. “A woman like you should be with a real man.”

“Excuse me Dingus, but I am a real man.” Keith slid in next to me, before anyone else could. “Besides, don’t go trying to steal this pretty lady from me.” Who does he think he is? I’m not even with him. I’m just here to buy him a drink and leave.

“Keith?” His attention was still focused on the man he called Dingus. “Keith?” I said just a little louder. This time he finally looked at me. “I’m just here to buy that one drink, then leave.”

“Sweetie, I wasn’t going to make you pay for a drink. That was just a way to get you to come with me. I figured if I didn’t do something, I would never see you again.” That sly dog. He is right. I would have done everything in my power to avoid him. “I’ll go grab us a drink. What would you like?” I’m already here, why not?

“A cheap beer will be fine.” Everyone that was paying attention laughed. What did I say?

“Honey, I can get you any drink you would like. Unless you like the taste of cheap beer, I’ll get you anything else.” He placed his hand over mine to reassure me that is was perfectly fine.

“Surprise me.” I didn’t really care at the moment what kind of alcoholic beverage he got me, as long as I could get the numbing juice in my system.

“So, Keith has told us about you. I didn’t believe him at first, but now I can see for myself.” One of the men slid in front of me followed by another and another, until the booth was full and I’m squeezed against the wall.

“What are you talking about? What didn’t you believe?”

The one sitting right next to me spoke up. “We didn’t think he met someone so gorgeous. We also didn’t think he would succeed in bringing you here.”

“Trust me, I really didn’t want to come, but he tricked me into coming.” They all laughed. I didn’t mean it as a joke.

“Are you guys talking about me?”  Keith passed me my beer. I smiled politely at him to let him know I am thankful for the drink.

“Not everything is about you.” Dingus pointed out. I’m sure he meant it as a joke.

“Yeah. Yeah. Would you move so I can sit by her?” Keith said to the men sitting next to me. They all slid out, then Keith slid in next to me. The rest who couldn’t fit in the booth grabbed a bar stool and pulled it up to the table. “So, what are we talking about?”

“Just about how you tricked me into coming with you tonight.”

“I had to do something. I would have never saw you again.”

“Now, would that have been so bad?” He could go on living his life. Me not being in his life wouldn’t change a thing.

“It might have been.” The look in his eyes sent tingles down my spine. What is this man thinking?

***Author’s Note***

Lately, I have been feeling really iffy about this story. I know there is a hand full of y’all who are very supportive, but it just seems like I’m not getting the votes. Just let me know what you guys really think.
