The only thought racing through my mind was 'I could go away'.  I could get away!  I wouldn't have to put up with Aunt Petunia's harsh words nor Uncle Vernon's meaty fists!

Well...except on holidays like Christmas and summer.  Would it be worth it?  Would things get worse when I came back?  Would months free of abuse be worth having to spend a couple of months out of the year being beaten worse than ever?

Biting my lips, I debated.  On the one hand, it's a school for witchcraft and wizardry, that basically promised adventure and a lot of amazing things happening in school corridors.  On the other hand..

It took me all of four and a half seconds for me to realize that, yes, it would be worth it.  If my brother could leave and live his life, then so could I.

"Girl!  Where are you?" The voice was loud and screechy, warbling at odd pitches towards the end of the 'you'.  That voice always made me cringe, it meant she was getting agitated.

"I'm in the kitchen Aunt Marge!"  I called out to her as I exited the kitchen with a plate full of food.  Sandwich and chips, with a salad topped with bacon crumbles and a pastry on the side.

In my pocket was hidden half a sandwhich, the other half had been eaten quickily as I made Aunt's.  She'd never know.

"Hurry up, Girl.  Auntie Marge is hungry!"

You're always hungry, I thought to myself as my stomach rumbled and cramped from hunger.  I stepped into the living room and could feel a squishy-ness on the bottom side of my shoe.  Lifting it up, I realized I'd stepped in dog feces, and immediately took my shoes off so I wouldn't track it all over the house.

Once I'd handed Aunt her plate of food, I went and got the cleaning supplies and picked up the nastiness off the floor before taking my shoes outside and washing the bottoms off with the water hose.

I couldn't wait until August twenty-second.  I no longer cared about the repercussions.

------

"Hey Bambino!"

The tiny, wrinkled brown and white puppy stared up at me before beginning the task of running (rather lopsidedly) towards my outstretched hands.  I grinned down at the six week old pup as the other dogs gathered around me and I tried my hardest to pet and give attention to them all.

The sun was just setting behind us, and I decided that for a little while longer than usual I'd stay out here with my only friends, the dogs.

As I let the pups crawl all over me my mind wandered to him.

Where was he now?  Was he happy with his life?  I'm sure he was, he was obviously too busy to write to me, too busy to just make a quick phone call.  Was he even still alive?

As much as I wanted to hate my brother for abandoning me, I didn't want him dead.

"Girl!  Get in the house!"

I sighed, rounding up all the canine's and taking them back to their room before laying down on my own palet.   Goodnight Harry, wherever you are....
