You Said We Needed to Talk

There's a photograph that wobbles in my head, it puzzles me

A memory from long ago that I promised to forget

You have a smug smirk on your face

I have your light blue, plaid shirt on

My dark green backpack is half open

Filled with Kit Kats and sour cream & onion chips

We were supposed to be stargazing on that warm, summer night

But you said that we needed to talk

So we walked back to your apartment in silence

Except for the sound of the buzzing street lights

I hesitated

You didn't have your arm around my shoulder

You unlocked the door and set the thermostat to 0 degrees Celsius

I was shivering, trying to grab a blanket or a sweater

But there was nothing there to comfort me

Just cold

I needed warmth

I reached out to you

The coldest thing in the living room

You almost froze me

But I escaped

And I never felt cold again
