John was pissed off.  He did not want Zoey along at all.  Frankly, I didn’t either, but I was doing a better job hiding it than he was, and I knew that there was nothing that I could do about it.  I knew he knew that too because he seemed to be taking his anger out on his driving.

Zoey and I were horrified.

He refused to tell us where he was going.  Apparently while I was asleep he and Dad discussed the game plan for the week.  I was just going to have to tag along.

“He does this sometimes,” I turned around to tell Zoey who was riding in the backseat holding on for dear life.

Horns were honking and people were yelling from all over the place.  “John, slow down before you kill someone!  If your upset, which I feel that you are, talk to me about it, don’t kill us!”

“I’m not angry.”

“Then why the hell are you driving like a maniac?!”

“That’s what you do when you’re being followed and you’re trying to shake them.”

I felt like a total dumbass.  I hadn’t even noticed that there was a car behind, let alone that it had been following us.

“Really?  We haven’t even been here for two hours and we already have to worry about being tailed?”

“Apparently.”

I looked back at Zoey and saw that she didn’t look as scared as she had before.  She probably really had thought John was trying to kill her.

John made a sharp turn into an ally and told us to get out of the car.

“I don’t think this is a very good idea…”  I said as I slowly opened my door.

“I’m going to run out of gas before I lose these guys.  We can hide somewhere down here, I’m sure.  Just follow me.”

Zoey and I did as he instructed, though I wasn’t happy about it.  If we got killed I was going to blame it all on him.

He led us behind a house where it was so dark I couldn’t see him or Zoey even though it was only like four in the afternoon.

“This is not going to work,” I said as I moved over to a different spot where there was light peeking through.

“What are you doing?!”  John whispered harshly to me.

“Trying to see!”

He and Zoey made their way toward me.  From our new spot, we could see that the car had pulled up right behind ours and that two men had gotten out with their faces covered.

We were so going to die.

As if to prove this fact even more, John’s phone started ringing.  He tried to muffle the sound, but to no avail.  The two men came running over to us and we were trapped.  It was only then that I realized what a stupid spot I had put us in; we were cornered because of the walls and other crap surrounding us.

The men didn’t seem to have any guns on them, but that didn’t mean they didn’t.  I wanted so badly to jump at them, and John and I probably would have under normal circumstances, but since we had Zoey, it probably wasn’t a good idea.  They could hurt her before we took them down.  It wasn’t worth the risk at the moment since they hadn’t drawn any weapons, but I was prepared for the situation just the same.  I only hoped John was thinking on the same wavelength as I was.

I couldn’t see Zoey, but I didn’t hear her crying which was a good thing.  I wasn’t sure why I had pictured her crying in a situation like this, I barely even knew her.  Maybe it was because she was a girl…that last part would be why I don’t have a steady girlfriend.

“Answer your phone.”  One of the men said in perfect English.  He sounded young, but it also sounded like he was trying to make his voice deeper than it really was.

John answered it, listened for a few moments, and then slammed it shut.  He looked like he wanted to throw it into a wall.

“Given away by a survey for shampoo,” John said looking at me like it was somehow my fault the company had chosen to call at that moment.

The two men laughed.  John, Zoey and I all looked at each other confused.  None of us were expecting that.  They weren’t evil laughs if you know what mean.  It was like they were really enjoying themselves.  Maybe they were happy they were about to kill some American kids in cold blood.

“Not a very good impression,” the other man said.  I could tell he was the elder of the two by his voice.  “Leaving your cell phone on ringer during an investigation.  Don’t even get me started on your hiding spot.  You’re going to have to do a better job if you ever want to become a real agent John.”

Jaw dropping moment.  How the hell did he know John’s name?

“Still can’t figure it out?”  The younger one said.  “How about…now.”  He and the other man took off their head covers.  I couldn’t believe my eyes.

It was Carson and Daniel Allen.
