Chapter 9- Masked

Anabelle’s P.O.V.

I looked around and took in my surroundings. I was in a room that was fairly unfamiliar to me. My eyes roamed around until I found something, no, SOMEONE familiar. Nate was asleep on a chair on the far end of the room.

“Nate?” I called out as I sat up.

His head shot up, looking around; the moment his eyes landed on me, he jumped up and ran to my side. “Are you feeling better?”

I nodded my head. “But that doesn’t mean I’m emotionally better,” I replied as I faked a smile. He shook his head.

“Okay. Maybe that was the wrong question. No, it IS the wrong question… so if I may ask, what happened?”

I took a deep breath in and tried to process everything I had to take in.

“My dad has a heart problem and he’s getting married with Aunt Jenna, okay, no big deal… Arianna’s dead. No big deal,” I laughed humorlessly. He gave me a look of pity. I immediately looked away. I hated that look. He sighed as I stood up from the bed.

“I’m sorry. I…” he apologized.

I shook my head.  “You don’t have to say anything. I know. My life’s terrible. No need to remind me of it by looking at me that way. What hurts is… I am losing everything I have left in my life; from my family to my best friend, only friend, as a matter of fact. What next? My life? Actually, I’d rather have it that way. No one needs me in this world anyways,” I said thoughtfully as I was on the verge of tears.

I heard his footsteps coming my way. I shut my eyes tightly as I tried to stop my tears from rolling down my cheeks. I suddenly felt warm hands wrapping up my hands in theirs. I opened my eyes slowly to meet Nate’s face inches away from mine.

“Never think that, Anabelle. You are needed here. Your family needs you,” he reassured me as he let go of my hands, which now felt colder as the warmth of his hands left me.

“I need you too,” he whispered, probably thinking that I couldn’t hear him. My jaw dropped.

“What did you just say?” I asked as I stared at him with wide eyes.

His eyes got wide as well. “I said nothing,” he replied quickly. I mentally rolled my eyes. I wasn’t deaf, but I couldn’t make sense of what he just said. I just brushed it off.

“By the way, where are we?” I asked suddenly.

Despair suddenly seemed to set in his eyes. “We’re in my mom’s cabin.”

I nodded. I didn’t want to push the topic since it seems like the topic of his mom is too personal for him, so I kept quiet. My phone suddenly started ringing. It was Aunt Jenna calling. My eyebrows furrowed as I saw her Caller ID. Why would she call me?

I ignored my mom’s phone calls; I did the same with my dad’s. What makes her any different? I sighed and clicked ignore. I threw my phone on the bed and stood beside Nate.

“Answer the phone, Anabelle. It might be very important if all three of them has been trying to call you,” Nate advised. I shook my head.

“No way in the world would I answer a call from the three of them. Not at this moment at least,” I grumpily stated with furrowed brows.

“I’m answering it for you,” he said as he walked towards my phone. I rolled my eyes. Did he really have to get into my business?

“Hello,” Nate said with a smile as he answered the call. His expression suddenly dropped and changed to a worried and surprised one. Once the call ended, he turned to me with a somber expression on his face.

“Well, what is it?” I questioned as I placed my hands on my hips.

He nervously twiddled with his fingers before reaching out to hold my hands. I raised my eyebrow at him.

“You might not take this well, so I suggest we both take a seat first…” Nate said with a hint of hesitation.

“Is it THAT bad? C’mon. I’ve heard a lot of news recently. Hearing another devastating one wouldn’t hurt,” I snapped.

He sighed as he mumbled, “Your dad was brought to the hospital because he had a heart attack.”

My hands dropped to my sides as I digested the news. The only words that actually registered in my mind was ‘hospital’ and ‘dad.’

I took a deep breath in. “What hospital is he in?”

“Florida Hospital Orlando.”

“Let’s go then.”
