CHAPTER 8

It was almost 5:30 in the afternoon when Sarah reached her parents’ house. She had to stop by at Shin’s place where she and Yeng were staying for quite a while now. It was Yeng who first moved into Shin’s place when Shin decided to live by herself and needed someone to help her with the monthly rental payment and other miscellaneous expenses like water bills, gas and electric bills and so on and so forth. It was early last year when Sarah joined her two girlfriends. She was jaded cynic when she left her parents’ house. Her logical thoughts was lost.

It had been a year and going on two years but the pain was still fresh. Sarah could still remember the worried face of her mom and it was still clear in her brain the furious look of her dad. That night…that night when she had a fight with him.

Sarah rang the doorbell chime attached on the pillar located at the side of their huge gate.

“Sino yan?” the owner of the voice asked.

“Gab, ate Sarah to”, Sarah answered on the speaker. The gate opened right after she answered. The dogs started barking from the yard as Sarah was taking her path to their house. Sarah covered her two ears with her two hands; she just couldn’t stand those dogs – it could be because of the loud annoying noise they were making or she just hated dogs. A maid opened the huge glass door and let Sarah in.

“Hello po ma’am, welcome back po”, the maid greeted her. Sarah just smiled at the maid and went straight inside the family room. There, she found her brother sitting on the floor in front of their flat screen television, playing his PS3.

“Yaya, pakuha ng water”, she asked the maid which the latter obeyed. “Sina mommy?’ Sarah asked Gab as she headed the direction of the couch that was behind Gab. Sarah sat down as she waited for her brother’s responce.

“Gab ano ba, asan sina mommy?”, she asked again, throwing a throw pillow at her brother. Gab was into his game, ignoring Sarah’s question. Sarah’s eyes wandered around. There was a little changes in their family room, it was different compared to the last time she was there..which was a year ago. Today, it was warm and very inviting. Gone was the cold and dull ambience. She saw an art hanging on the wall – it was her painting. An oil painting of notes and musical instruments giving a very light and happy mood to anyone who would look at it.

“Umalis sila ni ate Shine, babalik na rin yung mga yun. Nagpaayos ng wedding gown. Si daddy pauwi na rin from his negotiation”,Gab finally answered Sarah, he was scratching his head while uttering those words. Annoyed that his sister had to bother him from playing his game. His annoyed face suddenly transformed into a surprised face. “Itsura mo?” he said, uncomfortable to see his sister wearing a ragged outfit.

Sarah ignored her brother’s last two words and rolled her eyes. “Sinong ikakasal? Ikakasal na si ate Shine dun sa boyfriend niya?!” she yelled. She almost hit the glass of water that their maid was handling to her. Sarah grabbed the glass quickly and gulped down the water.

“Hindi mo ba alam?! Ik…aumm..ummmmm”, Gab wasn’t able to finish his sentence because the maid ran too fast to cover his mouth.

“Ay ma’am hintayin na lang po natin sina Mommy ninyo na magsabi na ikakasal ka na. Awwww ouchhh!!!” the maid screamed in pain when Gab bit her hand that was covering his mouth. The maid kept on waving her hand up and down to ease the pain. The door opened, three people entered the house wearing their shocked faces. Sarah looked at the direction of her mom, dad and sister who were already standing on the side of the family room. Sarah was confused. She couldn’t believe what she had just heard from their maid.
