"I would not suggest jumping out the window, it is a very long way down."

I turned to see Sorin, arms crossed, leaning on the door jam. "Why won't you let me leave?" I snapped. Crossing my arms, I frowned up at him.

He just stood there with his perfect face staring at me. I wanted to throw something at him. "Answer me damn it! You never said I would be held against my will!" My voice shook with the fear I felt taking over me, even though I tried to pretend I wasn't afraid.

"You are not a prisoner, the guards are only for protection." He looked at me intently. "My intention was not to upset you."

"If that were true, why did they say you told them to keep me here?" I challenged.

"I merely instructed that you not leave with them, nor alone. Should you be seen coming and going from my home it would leave a less than desirable impression. Whereas, if we are seen together the assumption that I am courting you would better serve your situation." His explanation more than made sense and from his grin it was obvious that he found me quite amusing. "If I would have known you would attempt to climb out the window, I would not have left."

"If you would have told me why I couldn't leave, I wouldn't have had any desire to climb out the window." There I was, snapping about something I had misunderstood. Worst yet, I had just been trying to persuade the guards into letting me leave.

Looking at him, I could see why no one would dare defy him. His very presence demanded respect.

"Vallin will not disobey me, so further seduction of him will get you nowhere." He smirked as if to mock me, but his eyes flashed a glimmer of admiration.

My crimson cheeks gave away my shame.

"I brought your animal, hoping it would bring you comfort. Did it not?" He asked.

"Yes." I was feeling ridiculous. "Thank you for bringing Max to me." I attempted to smile at him but I didn't lift my head, I felt like I should've opted for the swan dive.

"I thought it would be frightened if left all alone."

"Thank you," I said walking passed him. I went down the stairs with a blanket. I didn't like the idea of sleeping upstairs, so I had decided to sleep on the couch.

He followed me downstairs and sat in a chair across from me.

"Was your room not to your liking?"

"The room is fine. I just felt a little strange being in there alone," I admitted, not really knowing why I felt that way, I was just as alone on the couch as I would have been upstairs. Well, until Sorin showed up.

  He nodded in understanding.

We sat in an awkward, tense silence for a long time before I spoke, "I'm not dead am I?"

"I tried to tell you that."

  "This is all real?"

  "I am afraid so."

"Do you have any idea how unreal it is that I'm here with you?" The things I had seen him do completely defied the laws of physics. They nullified the very laws of nature and everything else I knew.

  "You have no idea."

What an odd thing to say. Surely he has no idea how it feels for me.

"So, you were at the cabin when everything happened?" I asked, trying to sort through everything.

  "I was."
