Chapter 3

Everyone winced as Damien threw multiple items around the room. The sound of them crashing up against the wall was just a testament to Damien’s anger and grief.

When Paul and Rob brought Allison McBride, dead and limp to him, explaining that they were ambushed by vampires and that Alec had snapped her neck, he couldn’t help but lash out.

He shouldn’t blame his Betas but everything in him was hurting. The woman he’d been waiting all his life for was dead, before he even had a chance to say one word to her.

And now the Council was standing beside him, waiting for him to calm down to eventually ask him if the engagement to Victoria was still on.

He should refuse to marry, to be a bachelor his whole life and just adopt a son and name him the next Alpha, just to stick it to the Council – heartless sons of bitches.

Finally Damien stopped breaking things at the same time his inner wolf stopped howling in pain. His rage had subsided and now all that was left was bitter loneliness and grief.

He couldn’t even feel his wolf anymore; he was depressed, much like his human counterpart.

“Alpha,” Councilman Harris, and Victoria’s father, started but Damien held up a hand.

“I don’t want to hear it.”

“But Alpha, we need to know if the engagement-”

“I don’t care about the fucking engagement! My mate, my one and only love, is lying dead on my bed and you’re asking me about marrying another woman? Can’t a man mourn in peace?” he yelled as loud as he could at Harris.

Damien was a very level-headed guy. He didn’t get mad often, but when he did it was the silent kind. He was never the one to blow up at someone like he just did at Harris.

His out-of-character behavior scared everyone in the room. It was dead silent as Damien kneeled next to his bed and held the warm hand of his mate.

He almost let a tear slide down his face, she was still warm.

Then there was a rustle from the bed. Confused, Damien looked up to see his mate’s eyes fluttering open.

Everyone watched, shocked, as the once dead Allison came back to life in front of their very eyes. Except for one thing, her eyes were a bright gold color, the trademark for a werewolf.

They all watched as she sat up on the bed and took her first deep breath and she cringed. Soon the Council was talking rapidly and Allison put her hands over her ears and curled into the fetal position.

She whimpered then Damien motioned for them all to be quiet. The room fell to silence once again, but the somber mood had changed to one charged with excitement.

The Alpha’s mate was alive and well! How was it possible?

“Allison?” Damien asked slowly.

Allison continued to rock herself back and forth, “It’s so bright, there’s so many smells, so many noises,” she said brokenly.

“Everyone, out,” Damien ordered and the Council left, leaving Damien, his mate and his Betas.

“What happened?” Damien asked as he stroked Allison’s mahogany colored hair.

“I don’t know,” Rob said. “I have no idea what could have caused her to come back from the dead like that.”

Paul was quiet as he replayed the events from the night in his mind. His eyes widened as he realized.
