Chapter 1

"I –I love you," breathed Mr. Darcy.

God he was beautiful and he loved...me. I couldn't take it any longer, I threw my arms around him and as he leaned in for the kiss I so desperately wanted...

He said, "Wake up! Time to wake up! You'll be late for class! Again Lily!"

Wait that's not right...crap I was dreaming. I opened my eyes and saw Bill staring down at me wearing a face I knew all too well. He was pissed.

"I'm up, I'm up. You know, you even manage to ruin my dreams. That takes skill. You should be proud," I said still half asleep, mildly amused that even half asleep I still had attitude towards him.

Bill glared at me for a few more seconds before storming out of my room. This was my life. Why couldn't I be Elizabeth Bennet and have my Mr. Darcy? I mean it doesn't have to be him, exactly, but something close to him. Why can't I find that? Oh right because I'm not human, dang it.

I threw myself out of bed, ignoring the throbbing in my legs. I cursed all the way to the shower until the water was running on me. My legs immediately stopped throbbing and they welcomed the cold water.

I went through my mental checklist, homework – check, piss of Bill – check, cute outfit for school – check, brush hair – check. I ran downstairs and started to make breakfast – toast and cheese, my favorite. Just then, Jill walked in with her daughter Rachael. They both moved so gracefully I couldn't help but stare in awe. I was quite the opposite of graceful, though my middle name was ironically Grace. I was known for walking into windows, falling down stairs and just tripping up over my own feet. I wish I could blame it on the fact that I wasn't human. I was not meant to be in this form but others like me weren't nearly as clumsy as me, so it's just me. I think it's because I'm always in my own head. I would be walking down the hall at school and my head would be miles away wondering what my family and friends were up to back home.

"Hello, is anyone home?" I looked up to find Rachael's annoyed face too close to mine.

"What yeh..." I muttered under my breath and glanced at my watch CRAP! If I don't leave now I'm going to be late for the third time this week, meaning detention – again.

"Morning Jill..Rachael." I smiled at them and ran upstairs to get my school bag.

"Where are you? I know I put you here last night. Come onnn I'm going to be late!! AH! There you are!" I yelled, grabbing my purple Marc Jacobs.

I ran downstairs, of course tripping on...air? "SMACK!" my head hit the ground. That is so going to leave an ugly mark. Great. I quickly recovered myself and continued to the door.

"Bye guys! Oh you can laugh, it's fine," I could tell they were holding in their laugh.

"Are you okay?" Rachael asked, trying desperately not to laugh. Jill wasn't as successful. She waved at me between fits of laughter.

"It will take a lot more then a bump on the head to hurt me! Bye!" and with that I was out the door, headed to my car.

Driving is not something I'm particularly comfortable with, but the Morgans made me learn when I moved in two months ago. Bill gave me lessons every day, and though I was absolutely terrible and didn't make it easy on him, he had an abundance of patience. I give him a lot of attitude because he acts like he's my father, but he's been really great. My father knew what he was doing when he left me with the Morgans. They treat me well and I'm far away from the war back home. I'm safe, unlike everyone I've ever known and loved.

I pulled into the parking lot of school.

"Lily! I thought you were going to be late again and have to go to detention missing out on our shopping spree!" said Kelsey, my best human friend. She was quickly making her way over to me, looking thoroughly relieved.

"You have no faith in me!" I accused her.

Kelsey's eyes wandered to my forehead and I was reminded of my throbbing headache.

"Yeh I fell. What's new?" I half smiled.

Laughing, she replied, "I'm surprised you don't have a concussion by now! Anyway, did you have the dream again?"

"Yes! But Bill woke me up just before we kissed! Once again, Mr. Darcy evades me!"

Kelsey laughed hard at that and it was a while before she could speak again.

The day was pretty boring, as usual. Even though I had only been here for a month, I got how things worked quickly. I was a fast learner and I was also great at reading people or, at least, I liked to think so. I couldn't help but miss my old school. Come to think of it, it was actually the exact same, except for the obvious things, and people knew who I really was. I guess all high schools are made up of cliques, human school, merfolk school, it was all the same when it came to teenagers.

I settled myself into a seat at the back of the class, waiting for Literature to begin.

"Attention class we have a new student, Michael Johnson," Mrs. Tulia said, gawking at the god standing next to her. Michael seemed to notice and I could see he suppressed a laugh, in fact as I looked around every girl in the class seemed to be ogling Michael, not that I could talk, I was staring at him too. I couldn't believe a human could be so beautiful...wait a minute, a human can't be that beautiful.
