The hospital was very noisy today.
Three new women were admitted, two of whom had lost children in the past and were extremely distressed. The other was just silently staring at a tear in the wallpaper. She must still have been in shock.
Losing a child is very distressing for all our mothers but our job is to try and prevent that in any way we can. It is heartbreaking to witness a woman in so much pain but when a baby survives everybody on the ward is given a little bit more hope.
That is why I do this job.
That is why I must help these women.

One woman who had been here for a while now went into labour this afternoon. Thing were looking promising yesterday but now all hope is gone.
The child is dead.

It was a very long day but I am back at Nonnatus House now. Pasty isn't home for a few hours yet so I'm going to watch the television with Sister Monica Joan for a while. We'll see what else happens tonight...
