Jedi Animus~ A Animus trained in the Jedi Philosophy (helping others, using your powers less and always controlling them ); breathes blue, green, or purple fire

Sith Animus~ A Animus trained in the Sith Philosophy (use power to hold power over others and keep order, uncontrolled raw power is best); breathes red or yellow fire

Scavenger~ a human

Dragons:

Kanan~ Jedi trained Animus, NightWing/SandWing hybrid, tanish scales, darker tan teardrop scales behind eyes and darker tan flecks underneath wings, turquoise eyes

Hera~ RainWing/SkyWing hybrid, green scales, green eyes, large wings

Chopper~ tan skinned scavenger with orange-ish "fur"

Soooo, since this is an AU, I will not be changing the names to match with their tribe. It also makes it confusing for others who do not read this series. :D Also, regular dragons, (non Animuses) breath orange fire, because that's kinda their superb weapon. :) Hope you enjoy. :D

(Also, I do not own Wings of Fire, all credit to Tui Sutherland)

Flying was freedom. The wind whistling through his wings, the hot sun reflecting of of his scales and casting rays light into the wispy clouds that's stretched across the blue horizon. Flying was to forget, his worries, his duties and his responsibilities. Flying was to forget what he was, no, who he was. Flying was to see the land stretched below him from horizon to horizon, soaring over the foothills of where he and Hera called home. Ghost Mountain stretched tall and noble over it's collapsed ruins that formed it's smaller twin, Phantom Mountain. Wheeling in the air, Kanan circled over it, pondering. He remembered the scrolls he had read as a dragonet in the Jedi Animus Acadamy. It hadn't always been called Ghost Mountain, but a prophecy had brought it to ruins under 'thunder and ice' leaving only ghosts. It wasn't considered scared place, but a place that even the bravest didn't visit. There were several stories of lost souls, dragonets who had died and their spirits had joined Force's in the stars. Kanan didn't believe any of it. He had spent days and nights in it's airy caverns, and he had seen neither Force nor any lost souls. He believed that Force existed of course, however reluctantly. The story of the Sister, Force, and how she was the mother of all animuses was legendary. It was a Jedi Animus teaching, the story of Force and her Nightwing brother, Darkside. The Jedi Animuses had focused on Force's story, while the Sith Animuses had taught, no, taught Darkside's rise to power. It was useless musings, Kanan decided as he turned back toward the valley he and Hera had set camp in. It wouldn't bring them back, and Kanan was glad, though he felt slightly guilty about it. Enough thinking, Kanan decided, and focused on the feel of a bright sunny day and the welcoming feel if the sun. Warm, like his partner's sideways smile and him and the gentle brush of her wing against his. Warm like the desert he loved. Warm, like how he felt when he watched Hera helping a dragon in need. Spreading out his wings to their full extent, (though not as long as Hera's), he caught a warm thermal that sent him spiraling higher and eastward toward his destination. Valleys lay stretched out beneath him like a green, wrinkly carpet, trees obscuring the rolling plains here and there, and a glint of icy white. Flaring his wings, he came to sudden halt. An IceWing? On the border of the Sand Kingdom? There was a glint of green too, and the IceWing flared his wings and slammed forward, as if pinning something to the ground. Kanan's mind clicked and he realized what was going on. Letting out a roar, he shot a blast of blue fire at the intruder, who dodged it just in time, leaving a twisted body lying there. Hera. His stomach churned and suddenly Kanan felt nauseous. Crashing to the ground forcefully, Kanan almost tripped over his own talons and tail. Rushing to her still body, he fumbled for her talons. Her pulse was still there, but her usually warm scales were cold and their sparkling green had faded slightly. Seeing something in the corner of his eye, Kanan threw up his wings in her defense. Red flames licked his wings harmlessly before dying out, confirming his theory. This dragon was a Sith Animus. Opening his wings and shooting a blast of blue fire at him, Kanan thanked his lucky stars for his enchanted earring. The IceWing darted higher, and Kanan followed, blood boiling, taking the opportunity to scrutinize his foe. He was definitely Imperial, obviously, and had red tattoos slipping across his glistening white scales. As if sensing his gaze, the Sith Animus turned to snarl at him, revealing wrathful yellow eyes. He turned directly towards him, though surprised, Kanan used the opportunity to lunge at the IceWing's throat. He didn't get there, however, instead slamming into an invisible, duracrete hard wall. Kanan felt a jolt, but no pain, again courtesy to his Animus touched earring. Thinking quickly, Kanan waved his talons. Wind, blow that IceWing out of the sky! Immediately, with a surprised look on his face, the IceWing was forced to the ground. The IceWing snatched up a stick, turning it in his talons. He's using his powers. Kanan realized with a flash of fear. I need something I an make into a weapon. The stick hardened and cracked in front of Kanan's eyes, forming a stone arrow, which shot out of his talons a second later, headed straight for Kanan. The Sith Animus had probably protected it from other Animus spells, Kanan realized, so it couldn't be enchanted again. Make my scales immune to harmful Animus spells. The stone arrow darted to him, poked him lightly, then fell towards the ground, harmless after it had completed what it was enchanted to do. Kanan slammed into the older dragon (or his protective bubble), knocking the breath out of him but successfully driving the IceWing to the ground. The Sith Animus was already reaching toward another object, Kanan realized.  Grass, form a strong, indestructible cage that no Animus can break out of; around this dragon. The ground bubbled, and shoots of grass elongated and twisted together in thick strands, darkening and hardening into an unknown stone or metal. The IceWing hissed at him from inside, opening a pouch that was tied around his ankle. Before Kanan had time to react, the object was in his talons. The air shimmer around the Sith Animus for a second before white light bended around him and he was gone. Stretching out his enchanted Animus senses, Kanan confirmed what he already knew: his enemy, and the dragon that had dared to hurt Hera, was gone.  Hera. Not taking time to properly dispose of the unnatural looking cage like he should have, Kanan darted to her side. She was laying motionless, her scales a glazed pale green he had never seen on her before. Two large talon marks scoured her flank, both oozing dark blood down her side. She was barely breathing, and her pulse was faint and weak. Kanan had ever used his powers for another's good after Order 66. It was unthinkable. Now, he found himself ready to do anything to save her. Taking his left earring off, he thought quickly,  Earring, I enchant you to heal any wound of the wearer. Shooting a guilty glance at her, he gently touched her side. I enchant this dragon's scales to not feel any pain. When Hera had first discovered his powers, she had made it clear to him: no enchantments or mind tricks were to be put on her or her pesky Scavenger she had nicknamed Chopper. There was no time to think about, though. Not when she was dying. Wincing as he pushed the earring into her right ear, he clasped the back. Talons tingling from accidentally brushing against her neck, he pulled his hand away. The effect was immediate. Her scales rippled, the scratches healed, her chest visibly rose and fell once more, and the healthy emerald green returned. Kanan's wings collapsed with relief, and with a twitch of his talons her scales were un-enchanted. Moments later, her talons and wings twitched, and she sat up. Kanan half wanted to throw his wings around her, but instead he gently brushed his wing against her larger one. "How do you feel?" Hera shook her head as if to straighten her thoughts, talons gently touching her head, then with a wince, her earring. "Like I just got attacked by an Animus." Her voice was dry with humor, and Kanan wondered if she knew that she could've died. Her green eyes sharpened as she remembered what had happened, and she turned in a circle, trying to find their foe he presumed. Quickly, he stepped forward and took her talons in his, stopping her from going. "He got away, I had him but he used a Animus touched object and just disappeared." She looked up at him, not pulling away, and smiled gently. "I'm sure you did your best." Her eyes landed on where his earring had been, and her talons reached up to lightly brush his piercing, her touch sending what felt like a wave of heat through his scales. "I'm wearing your earring." Kanan shifted guiltily without letting go of her talons. "I know. "I had to use it to heal you-" Hera's head snapped up and the way she looked at him made Kanan feel guilty like he has betrayed her trust. "You enchanted me?!" "I didn't- I mean- Hera, you would've died." Wide green eyes looked up at him. "But what about your soul?!" Kanan paused, remembering that he while he had confessed most of his past, he hadn't told her about the Jedi Animus Padawan-Class Rituals, mostly because it was a secret only Jedi Animus's knew, but also because he was afraid that if she found out she would hesitate to ask him to aid the rebellion with his 'gift'. Every youngling took the test before getting assigned a Master to guide them and teach them the Jedi Animus ways. The ritual was scared, and protected the dragonet's soul for their life time. He managed a smile back at her. "My soul is fine." She didn't look convinced, but pulled her talons out of his and reach up to take off her earring. "Well I guess you probably want this back." Before she could take in off, Kanan intercepted her talons. "Don't, it looks nice on you." Hera's gaze flickered up to his, but she didn't move to give it back. Watching her carefully, he took a step closer to her, gently freeing his talons to brush his talons gently against where the earring rested before tapping the earring with one talon. Although not touching her, he could've sworn he felt her heart rate increase. "Can-can I do something? To protect you?" She didn't respond for a moment, but when she did her voice was slightly softer than usual. "S-sure." After a moment she added, "Just be careful." And then more hesitantly, "I don't want to lose you." He nodded, then gravely spoke to the earring. "Earring, I enchant you to protect this dragon from all harm, and give her the ability to community telepathically with me when desired. Do not come off unless she wills it, and make her immune to any harmful animus magic." He held her gaze for a moment longer, and she tilted her head up slightly to look meet his eyes. Kanan could feel her gentle breath on his face. "CHOP CHOP CWOP CHOP CHWOP COP!!!" Suddenly, there was a sharp pain near his tail, and Kanan let out a muffled roar and jumped backwards. "CHOPPER!" The small, russet furred scavenger clambered over his talons letting out several victorious little squeaks and chirps along with the classic "CHOP!"s that had given him his name. "Chopper!" Hera didn't sound nearly as irritated with him as he would like, but she did give him a good scolding to which he responded with several rude and unrepentant noises. After she was finished with Chopper, Hera turned back towards him. "We should probably go. Just in case they some back." Kanan nodded in agreement, gesturing with one wing for her to go ahead and lead the way. "I'll carry Chopper." He volunteered, shooting the Scavenger a dark look. "That's okay, I have him." Scooping him up, Hera plonked him on her back, to which he responded by hastily grabbing one of her spikes. She turned her head gingerly, checking to make sure he was secure before taking of effortlessly. He watched her for a moment taking in the beautiful sight of her alive and well, flying off into the sunset. Hesitating only a second more, Kanan followed, leaping into the sunset and flying with the dragon of his dreams into the beyond.

Whew, that took me a while to write! :) More soon, I've already started the SWR wolves AU. Feel free to tell me what you think! :D
