he let out a soft laughter. it sounded like rain over a long, drought. and i long to see his face.

i scooted closer to his side to steal a glance on it. see if he was smiling. but he looked away before i could. he went on.

"i should have known better that father would find me days later.  i buried myself deep under the ground. only feeding from rabbits or squirrels.  he found me and took me back home with him. he waited until i was properly dressed and well-fed.  after that, he brought me to one of his headquarters in Spain. we spent only one night there. but to me, it seemed like forever. evrything smelled dank, and everyone reeked of hostility and hopelessness.

the next night when we set off for home he explained it to me:

we exist fo people like them. they look upon us for guidance. they need us as much as we need them. that's why we make laws and carry it out.

i never understood his words until he was gone."  there was pain laced with something like bitterness in his voice. but it was gone in an instant.
