“What are you doing?” She cried. “Where are you going? Don’t leave me! PLEASE!” And when he kept walking, without turning back, she felt her heart break. She could feel physical pain in her chest. She always thought that heartbreak had a figurative meaning, but now she knew it was literal too. As he was just about to go back in and leave her, he heard her whisper, “You’re the only one I have left. You’re the only one who loves me now.” He almost broke down then, almost ran back to her, almost scooped her up in his arms, almost gave in, but then he remembered how much was at stake. He hated seeing her cry, hated seeing her in pain, but nothing could help that now. Hopefully, she would understand over time. Or at least make up her mind. He could deal with hate, sadness, bitterness, but he couldn’t handle having to help her. Not when she would be this vulnerable.
