Chapter Five: The Journal

September 25

Emma had just gotten the mail and noticed that there was a box in amongest the bills. Emma sat down at the table while she opened the box. There was a leather journal inside. She opened the journal and on the inside cover she read Corporal Smith. Emma's fingers ran softly over the letters as she began to cry.

She flipped to the first entry,

September 5

I've lost my best friend today. Now I'm lost in this dense jungle and can't find my way out. I walked for hours until I came to the place I'm at now. I'm hoping to be back before Christmas to see my beautiful wife.

The tears rolled down Emma's face as she read the rest of Jake's journal. The last two entries in the journal read,

September 16

Today I was found by some fellow Marines. I found out that the baby's due in mid April and that Emma has a cracked knee cap. Hoping that I'll be home in the next few days to see my beautiful wife.
