Chapter 5 ~ Caleb’s P.O.V

Somehow, Scottie and I managed to end up next to each other as the guards lead us into the hallway. His face showed little emotion, and it killed me. I nudged Scottie a little, finally getting him to look at me. He smiled a little, but I knew it wasn’t real. He was trying to get me to stop worrying about him so much. I tried to smile back, but I couldn’t. Instead, I looked away at the guard standing next to me.

He was Guard-Captain Ian, the one who was in charge of us. I took in his features; the messy brown hair, the deep green eyes, his scar on his newly-shaven chin. He held his head high and normally received looks of admiration. I had to admit, even I felt some admiration towards him. I couldn’t exactly figure out why, but there’s an air about him. The guard noticed me staring at him, and looked me straight in the eyes.

He slightly nodded and I probably gave him a confused look, because I had no idea why he nodded. I looked away, hoping he wouldn’t give me any trouble. Luckily, he didn’t.

Guard-Captain Ian then went to the front of the group and opened some large doors that we entered through. Standing in the center of the room was Maura and a young girl, possibly…fifteen, with deep red hair kept in two waist length braids. Dirt lightly covered her caramel skin, faded black jeans, her long-sleeved gray shirt, and her black hiking boots. Her hazel eyes failed to show any emotion, as did her face. Absolutely none. Maura’s, though, showed sadness, disgust, anger, and pity all at the same time. I pulled Scottie slightly closer to me. Once everyone shuffled into the room, Maura just nodded and stepped forward more.

“I welcome you all to your new home,” she smirked, knowing that this place was anything but to us. “Fortunately for you, you have been specifically chosen to become apart of my army... If any of you have anything against the matter, step forward and make yourself known.”

A few men and women stepped forward, looking around like they would just be let out of this place. I knew better… this wasn’t a matter of wanting to or not. You had to be apart of this army. These people who stepped forward, they shouldn’t have done that. Maura just smiled brutally at them, like she was trying to hide her cruelty and yet let them have a hint that they would die.

“Please, step up onto the platform.” The group silently did as she said, eager to just leave. They stood side by side, in a neat row. “These people have to be made an example of. Turn against me, and you will be killed. No mercy. Just pain.”

The people suddenly tried to get off the platform but guards kept them at bay, holding them back. Another group emerged from behind us, but they were Maura’s guards… except they had black eyes. They stood in front of each one of those people and raised their hand. Within a second, each fell to the ground dead without a sound. People gasped and Scottie held on to me just a little bit tighter. I glanced at that fourteen year old girl, noticing her wince as she heard the thud of the bodies. I also noticed Guard-Captain Ian’s jaw clenched. Every other guard, though, was unfazed.

“That is all.” Maura said and waved her hand to dismiss us. I glanced one last time at that girl, as did Scottie, and saw her talking to Maura briefly before walking over to Guard-Captain Ian. As they talked they both looked towards me and Scottie. Scottie walked into the hallway with me but somehow I lost him in the crowd.

I was worrying non-stop as to why Scottie came in our cell block later than the rest of us. It was at least two hours later, and he was followed by Guard-Captian Ian.

“So what’s your name, kid?” a voice said suddenly. I was back in my cell just sitting in the dark when he spoke to me. The voice was familiar but without seeing his face, I couldn’t place it. How was he outside my cell? The guards made sure to get us separated and quiet at all times.

“Caleb, what is your’s?”

“It doesn’t matter. Listen, Caleb, something is going to happen very soon and you need to take any chance you get to take your little friend and run.”

“What are you talking about?” I whispered glancing around making sure no one could hear us. All the guards were lying asleep.

“We are gonna escape, kid.”

“We?”

“Yeah, you, me, your little friend, and my friend.”

“And just how are we going to do that?” I almost wanted to laugh at his craziness. He thought we could actually escape?! That’s ridiculous!

“Well you see those sleeping guards over there?” I nodded then realized he couldn’t see me so I so I mumbled ‘yes’. “They aren’t really sleeping, kid. I killed them. We are gonna dress up like them and escape that way.” Okay that guy really is crazy! I haven’t slept at all and haven’t heard a single thing, yet he killed them. Anyways, how the hell is he outside my cell!?

“How are you outside my cell? And how did you kill them? How the hell are you!?”

“Guard-Captain Ian at your service. That answer about all your questions?”

“Yeah, just about.” I couldn’t help but smile. “You want to get me out of this cell, Guard-Captain Ian?”

“Just call me Ian, and not yet, kid. Have to keep up the act a bit longer.”

“So you were just acting the whole time?”

“ Basically. But I have to keep my cover and I will do anything, and I mean anything, to do that. I am trying to help you escape but I can’t get caught with you.”

“I get it. So when are we going.”

“Give me a few minutes.” Gua- I mean Ian got up and nudged the other guards to make sure they were really dead then checked the hallways. Once that was done, he striped the one guard and gave me the clothes, which I changed into.

“Keep your back straight, kid. You want to act honorable for working for Maura.”

“Honorable?”

“That kind of attitude will get you caught.”

“Sorry.”

“Anyways, your little friend-”

“Scottie.”

“Right, he will have to act as a prisoner we are escorting because, well… he’s too short to be a guard. And my friend, Charlie, will meet us outside.”

“Anyone else joining us?”

“That’s it,” he said while unlocking my cell before moving along to Scotties. Scottie walked out silently and stretched a little. First he stretched out his arms and then his legs. When he looked at me he had a large grin on his face.

“Ready?” he asked cheerfully, as if we were going on some random adventure and not on a mission that could quite possibly ensure our deaths. The smile on his face made me suddenly aware that he must have known about this ever since he came back from where ever he had been.

“As ready as I’ll ever be…” Ian came over and shackled Scottie’s hands behind his back, but I could tell they weren’t locked so he could easily slip them off. I held the chain tightly and readied myself for what lay beyond those large wooden doors. Could we really pull this off and escape? After spending days locked up and barely fed, could we finally be free and able to do what we please? Scottie seemed so sure, and I didn’t want to let him down. Ian opened the door and motioned for us to follow. Here goes nothing.
