Chapter Ten: Tonight, Tonight

“We’re witches!” Demi exclaimed to the historical old man in front of them.

Merlin—yes, the long beard and odd clothing, wizard Merlin—was dropping more potions on the two witches, all of which had no effect on them. Most of the potions brought out a cloud of smoke, but Chris did something to move it each time.

“Can we please speak with you?” Chris asked as he coughed on smoke.

“We’re the good guys!” Demi shouted.

“We’re from the future!” Chris said after removing the smoke from the room.

Merlin stopped and studied their faces.

“It’s why we talk funny and stick out like a sore thumb,” Demi added, even though Merlin would not understand her analogy.

“Please! You have to at least let us talk!”

“Those potions didn’t blow us to smithereens so it’s clear that we aren’t demons or warlocks!”

Merlin stared at them with his beady dark eyes. His face was saggy and wrinkled. His hair and beard were a tangled grey mess. He wore a blue…dress is what it looked like, but it…it was a non-feminine dress. Like a male nightgown.

In movements too swift for a man of his age, he withdrew a dagger from his sleeve. He let out a battle cry and lunged for the witches.

Luckily, Chris was faster. He orbed Demi and himself to the attic, back in San Francisco in modern times.

Demi couldn’t help but sigh in relief.

“After I put real clothes back on, I’m going to kill you!” Demi shouted and marched down into her room.

Chris grabbed her wrist and spun her around to face him. “It was fun for a while and you know it!”

“I’m not so sure that I do,” Demi shrugged.

Chris’s arms wrapped around her waist and he pulled her to him. Before Demi could think to jump away, Chris’s lips had already collided with her’s.

Demi’s brain was protesting. Her thoughts were screaming at her to move, to get out of his grip, but her body wasn’t listening. If anything, she felt herself wanting to stay like this for a while. She wanted to stay in his arms—and yes, she knew how corny and cheesy that sounded—and she could admit that she liked this.

But could she admit that she liked Chris? Or Wyatt?

No.

Maybe she just liked being kissed, that’s normal! So it was wrong to kiss, or be kissed, by a guy you don’t like in that way. Right?

Demi found her strength again and pushed Chris away.

“What is wrong with you?” She gave him an extra shove.

“What? Is it wrong to like you? What’s wrong with that?” Chris exclaimed frustrated.

“Yes! It’s wrong!” Demi crossed her arms.

“Why? Because Wyatt likes you too? Well, Demi, you’re going to have to choose.”

“I’m not choosing anything! My final answer is none of the above! I’m here because my White-Lighter sent me to stay here! He sent me here to learn magic and continue my duties as a witch, not to kiss you people!” Demi shook her head.

“How do you know? How do you know that the reason he sent you here was to—“

They were interrupted by the sounds of someone orbing in.
