Chapter 9

I heard the knock on the door right as I came down the steps. "Coming!" I shouted.

I walked to the door and unlocked it, then finally opened it. Hunter was standing there, smiling, with one hand in his pocket and the other dangling loosely at his side. He looked... handsome, wearing a loose, white button up shirt with faded jeans and black shoes. His blonde hair was messy, yet looked nice at the same time. "Hey," he said.

I smiled at him, stepping out of the door. "Hey Hunter."

"Ready?" he asked, turning slightly. I nodded and shut the door behind me, then followed him down the sidewalk leading to the driveway. He went over to the passenger side and opened the door, motioning me inside. I smiled at him and climbed into the car.

What a gentlemen, I thought to myself. He went around to the driver's side and got in the car. He started the car and I suddenly became nervous. I was on a date. With one of my good friends. What would happen to us if it went badly?

"Music?"

I shook my head, turning my attention back on him. "Sure."

He pushed a button and music began playing through the car. A thought struck me as we pulled out of my neighborhood. Where the heck were we even going? I hadn't even bothered to ask him, let alone think about it, until just now. "Where are we going?"

He smiled. "It's a surprise."

I smiled and felt my face grow warm. I hadn't been on many dates in my life, but this was the first time a guy had actually bothered to make it a surprise. It made me feel... happy. He turned down a familiar road and I looked out the window, watching the trees go by fast.

"The suspense is killing me," I commented, looking over at him.

He looked back at me. "I know you'll like it. I'm sure of it," he said.

He turned again, and I looked ahead, widening my eyes. "The fair?" I asked, excitedly. I felt like a little kid again, which wasn't really a bad thing. I hadn't been to the county fair in a few years. The tradition was to always go with my dad, but he... hasn't been home every time the fair comes to town.

"I thought you might like it," he said, parking his car in an empty space. We both got out of the car and began to walk up to the ticket booth.

"I haven't been here in years," I sighed, looking up at all the lights on the rides.

"Is it okay that we came here?" he asked,  doubt in his voice.

"Yes!" I exclaimed excitedly. "This is perfect!"

"Good, I'm glad," he smiled. To my surprise, he wrapped his arm around my shoulders and guided me to the short, fast-moving line of people at the ticket booth. I honestly didn't know if I should wrap my arm around his waist or something, so I just let his arm continue to rest on my shoulders and I kept my arms at my side. We made it to the front of the line and he put two twenties on the counter. "I need two all-night passes please."

The lady at the counter nodded and handed him two glow in the dark , paper bracelets. We moved forward and passed the gates, and he handed me mine. "Here, this will let us go on any ride without a ticket."

I took the bracelet from him and put it on. His arm took its place on my shoulders once more and we both walked on the dirt path in between all of the rides and game booths. "What are we going to do first?" I asked.

"Whatever you want to do," he said. I looked around at all of the booths, trying to decide. I saw a dunking booth with a clown in the tank, taunting the people who walked by, egging them on to try and get  him into the water.
